Description: Japan's Cream Nantara revisited a dispute about a Crayon Shin-chan script on October 19, 2026. Hasumi explained why a harsh review was not the precise issue.

The answer

Japanese comedian and playwright Sho Hasumi distinguished criticism of his work from later criticism of his personal attitude. He said the latter was what upset him. On Cream Nantara he insisted he had not initiated a fight with veteran entertainer Hikaru Ijuin. The Japanese expression often translated as “biting back” means verbally challenging a senior figure, not a physical altercation.

What happened on Shin-chan?

Hasumi, of the comedy and theatre group Dow 90000, wrote the September 19 special Crayon Shin-chan story A Certain Afternoon with the Nohara Couple, a descriptive translation of its Japanese title. Shin-chan barely appeared. Instead, parents Hiroshi and Misae talked in a scene staged almost like a continuous shot. The broadcaster had promoted this unusual approach before transmission.

On September 21, Ijuin said on radio that he found the episode exceptionally unfunny. On September 24, Hasumi responded with self-deprecating humour about perhaps needing more of the familiar jokes associated with Shin-chan. Ijuin apologized for causing trouble on his September 28 radio broadcast. That apology did not establish agreement about the episode's artistic merit.

Why did the October 19 studio laugh?

The 11:45 p.m. Japanese broadcast of Cream Nantara featured a quiz about Hasumi. Host Teppei Arita introduced him as though Ijuin had praised him, prompting an immediate correction. Kano from A Masso exaggerated his power to judge senior comedians. Hasumi carefully explained that a later comment portraying his recent attitude as uncool had bothered him.

Co-host Shinya Ueda pointed out how detailed the explanation was becoming. Arita kept asking whether Hasumi habitually challenged his elders. The harder Hasumi tried to reject the image of an argumentative young comedian, the better his reaction worked as television comedy.

Bottom line

Disliking a script and judging its writer's attitude are different acts. Hasumi wanted that distinction understood, and the effort itself became the punchline. This account draws on broadcaster information and contemporary reporting, not an independent viewing of the complete video. The studio's teasing is not evidence of a private feud.
