Description: Sony walked away from Hideo Kojima's espionage game and Xbox stepped in. Here's what is confirmed about PHYSINT's survival, why PS5 availability is uncertain, and what announcement would settle the question.
PHYSINT is still in development, but a PlayStation release has not been confirmed as of October 28, 2026. Xbox Game Studios is now its publisher. A new publishing deal establishes who is backing the project; it does not, by itself, reveal the final list of platforms.
The project survived a canceled partnership
Kojima introduced PHYSINT at a PlayStation presentation in January 2024. For players who associate his name with Metal Gear, a return to action espionage was a compelling promise: another chance to see how he approaches stealth without simply revisiting an old series.
Then came a striking reversal. On September 9, 2026, Xbox announced that it would publish PHYSINT. Kojima subsequently explained that PlayStation Studios had notified his team in mid-June that it intended to cancel the project. Kojima Productions spent roughly three months looking for another partner. Xbox's official announcement explicitly says development is moving forward. The old arrangement ended; the game itself found a way to continue. [1][2]
Does Xbox publishing automatically rule out PS5?
No platform list or release date accompanied the announcement. That distinction matters more than the console-war headlines. Xbox being the publisher is confirmed. A PS5 version, an Xbox-only release, and the eventual generation of consoles are all questions for a later announcement.
In a September 10 Reddit discussion, some commenters hoped PHYSINT would still reach PlayStation, while others worried about the implications of the switch. Those are identifiable individual reactions, not evidence that every player agrees. [3]
The separate Kojima Productions horror project OD also involves Xbox, but it is a different game. Its arrangement cannot substitute for PHYSINT's own platform announcement. Nor should a speculative 2030 release estimate be mistaken for a scheduled launch. [1][2]
The next clue is a platform logo
For now the useful answer is simple: PHYSINT survived Sony's withdrawal; its PlayStation future is open. Watch for an official platform list and release window, rather than interpreting the publisher's name as a final compatibility chart. In a game about espionage, the most closely guarded secret may currently be the box it will run on.
