Description: Pixel freezes while unlocking with a fingerprint? Check the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 fix, build numbers, safe restart steps and beta rollback data risks.
If your Pixel stops responding as you unlock it with your fingerprint, it may match a defect fixed in Android 17 testing. Google's October 2, 2026 QPR3 Beta 1 notes explicitly list a fix for freezing during fingerprint unlock, linked to #490719716, #514867650 and #523022829.[1]
A rejected scan is not a frozen phone
A failed fingerprint scan or a PIN request after reboot differs from an unresponsive screen. If the display works, use your PIN, pattern or password and save open work. If everything is frozen, wait briefly instead of repeatedly pressing the sensor. Google has not published the exact technical cause or incidence by model.
Check your build
| Installed software | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pixel 11 family, QPR3 Beta 1 | DP11.260918.005; beta containing the fix |
| Other eligible Pixels, QPR3 Beta 1 | DP11.260918.006; beta containing the fix |
| Earlier beta | Check for an official update |
| Stable Android 17 | Start with general fingerprint and freezing diagnostics |
Find it in Settings → About phone → Android version / Build number. Availability varies by device, region and enrollment. A beta fix does not establish that stable Android has received it.[1][2][3]
Recover safely
- If the screen responds, unlock with your PIN and check backups of photos and important files. Re-enrolling a fingerprint is a separate option for recognition errors, not a proven system-freeze fix.[4]
- If completely frozen, try a normal restart. On many Pixels, holding the power button for roughly 30 seconds forces a restart. Unsaved app changes may be lost.[5]
- After reboot, record the build. Beta users can check Settings → System → Software updates for the official update offered to their device.[2][3]
- If the fixed build still freezes, record the time, build and whether PIN works, then submit beta feedback.
The data-wipe trap
Do not switch an everyday stable Pixel to beta just for this fix. Google warns that returning from beta to stable normally wipes local device data. Limited no-wipe exit windows exist around some stable releases.[3] Read the warning, back up first, and avoid factory reset or unofficial flashing as first-line troubleshooting.
Bottom line
Fingerprint-unlock freezing is on Google's QPR3 Beta 1 fixed-issues list. Use your backup unlock method, verify the build and follow official updates.
