The short answer first
If you cannot find where to choose a model or reasoning level in the ChatGPT app for Android, do not immediately conclude that “it does not work on Android.” Check these in order:
- Look at the top of the conversation for a selection menu
- Update the ChatGPT app to the latest version
- Open the web version of ChatGPT with the same account
- Check whether you can choose the reasoning level on the web
- If the web version is easier to use, add it to your home screen from Chrome
According to OpenAI's official help information checked on August 23, 2026, eligible paid plans can choose reasoning levels such as Instant, Medium, and High. The guidance places the selection menu at the top of the conversation on Android and near the message box on the web. Plus includes Medium and High.
So even if you cannot find the option in the Android app, that does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable. You may simply not have found the entry point.
What actually happened
In one Android environment, even after switching back to Plus, there was no obvious place in the app to choose the model or reasoning level.
Paying again because you want to do deeper work, only to lose sight of the main control, feels roughly like this:
I bought the strong weapon. Where did the equipment screen go?
When the same account was opened in the web version through Chrome, the selection was available there.
| How ChatGPT was opened | Result in that environment |
|---|---|
| Android app | Could not find the selection control |
| Web version in Chrome | Selection was available |
The important thing here is not to mix personal experience with the official product specification.
“I could not find it on my phone” is a fact. “People cannot select it on Android” is not. The official documentation does provide for a selection menu on Android.
There are several possible reasons the interface looked different: rollout timing, the state or version of the app, account or workspace settings, or simply overlooking the control. If the cause has not been confirmed, it is safer not to state one as certain.
Put the web version on your home screen
If the web version has the feature you need, you do not have to search for it every time. Chrome can create a shortcut on your home screen.
Steps
- Open Chrome on Android
- Open the web version of ChatGPT
- Tap “︙” in the upper-right corner
- Choose “Add to Home screen”
- Follow the instructions shown
This gives you an entry point that feels fairly close to an app in everyday use.
If “Add to Home screen” does not appear
If you open a link from the Google app, X, LINE, a news app, or another application, the page may open in that app's built-in browser instead of Chrome itself.
It looks like a browser, but it is a different environment underneath.
If the menu offers something like “Open in Chrome,” “Open in browser,” or “Open in external browser,” switch to Chrome first. Then open Chrome's “︙” menu again. The option to add the page to your home screen may appear there.
You do not need to delete the app
You do not have to choose permanently between the app and the web version.
The app can be more convenient for voice input, photos, notifications, and quick questions. The web version may make some controls easier to see.
If you cannot find the feature you need in one version, use the other. That is enough.
Summary
If you cannot find model selection in ChatGPT for Android:
- check the top of the conversation
- update the app
- try the web version with the same account
- if the web version is easier to use, put it on your home screen
When a paid feature exists but its entry point is hard to see, the experience can feel almost the same as not having the feature at all. That is why it helps to separate two questions: does the feature exist, and where is the control shown?
