Description: Blank app thumbnails in Pixel's recent apps view match Google issue #515091621, fixed in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1. Check the build, distinguish privacy-protected previews, and avoid unnecessary resets.

If the recent-apps screen opens but the app cards no longer show their previews, Google has documented a relevant fix. Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1, released October 2, 2026, lists missing app previews under issue #515091621.[1] Check your build before deleting launcher data or considering a factory reset.

Is it the same problem?

With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom, pause, and release to open Overview. With three-button navigation, use the Overview button.[2] Look for blank or missing snapshots inside otherwise visible app cards. A single app hiding sensitive content, an app crashing on launch, and an Overview screen that will not open are different diagnostic paths. Google does not identify a definitive list of affected apps or Pixel models, nor does the release note disclose a root cause.[1]

Version and device check

Open Settings → About phone → Build number; then look under Settings → System → Software updates for updates offered to your device. Google lists these QPR3 Beta 1 builds:[1][3]

Device family Fix-containing beta build Important distinction
Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL, 11 Pro Fold DP11.260918.005 QPR3 Beta 1
Other supported Pixel models DP11.260918.006 QPR3 Beta 1
Stable Android 17 devices Stable inclusion not established by these notes Do not assume the beta fix has arrived

Safe troubleshooting by symptom

  1. Cards are blank, apps still open: Open two ordinary apps and return to Overview. Note whether every card or just one is affected. Avoid screenshots containing private messages or account details.
  2. Overview itself does not appear: Confirm the navigation method and restart normally once. This is a general diagnostic step, not a Google-certified workaround for issue #515091621.
  3. Apps crash or freeze: Record the app name, time, and build separately. Missing previews do not prove the app's own data is damaged.
  4. Already on QPR3 Beta 1: Confirm the exact build. If the issue persists, use Android Beta Feedback to report it; an announced fix is not the same as a verified result on your device.

Should you install beta just to fix thumbnails?

A daily-use phone on stable Android should not be moved to beta casually. Google warns that leaving beta for a stable release usually wipes local device data, except for limited no-wipe windows around qualifying stable releases.[3] Clearing Pixel Launcher storage may change home-screen arrangements; factory resetting removes local data. Neither is Google's documented fix for this specific issue.

Bottom line

Blank recent-apps thumbnails plus an older build is a reason to check issue #515091621 and update availability. The October 2 fix is documented for QPR3 Beta 1. Keep the distinction between a release-note fix and your own observed recovery, and protect your data first.
