Quick answer: Google's October 2, 2026 notes list Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 as fixing Wi-Fi that fails to reconnect on background wake when hardware PNO scans fail or are unsupported (issue #551970385). This is a narrowly defined failure, not a fix for every Wi-Fi dropout. As of October 18, a stable QPR3 rollout containing the fix has not been verified.
Does your symptom match?
A phone was connected to a saved network, went idle with the screen off, and later failed to rejoin automatically. Waking the display or toggling Wi-Fi may help. That resemblance alone cannot establish the cause.
PNO (Preferred Network Offload) scans for known networks with low power consumption. The public developer report describes drivers without functioning PNO support, failed retries, and no usable failure signal for apps. Its Android 13/15 code analysis is not a field test of every Pixel model.
Check before making changes
| Check | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi on but disconnected? | Not simply a disabled radio |
| Only after screen-off idle? | Closer to background wake |
| Other devices also offline? | Router or ISP may be responsible |
| Another network works? | Possible access-point-specific issue |
| Exact build number? | Distinguishes stable and beta builds |
Open Settings → About phone → Android version / Build number. QPR3 Beta 1 uses DP11.260918.005 on Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold; other eligible Pixels use DP11.260918.006. Eligibility is not evidence that a particular model was affected.
Safe troubleshooting order
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Internet, ensure Wi-Fi is on, and select the saved network.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on once; check that Airplane mode is off.
- Restart normally and note whether the failure occurs only after idle.
- Test another device on the same router, then another trusted Wi-Fi network.
- Check Settings → System → Software updates for an official update on your current channel.
For observation, let the screen turn off during normal use for a few minutes. Do not force suspend with ADB or modify drivers merely to reproduce the bug.
Still disconnected?
“Connected, no internet” is a different branch: check router service, captive portals, VPN and signal. Forgetting a saved network requires its password again. Resetting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can remove saved connections and pairings; treat it as a later step. Mobile-data fallback can use your allowance or incur charges.
Google warns that leaving Android Beta for a public stable build normally wipes local data, and backup restoration may be imperfect. A daily-use phone need not join beta just for this fix.
Bottom line
Confirm the build and conditions, then try reversible reconnection and comparison steps. The documented fix concerns PNO-related background reconnection, not every Wi-Fi failure.
