Miranda Hart thought she was withdrawing an accusation. Joanne McNally felt that announcing the withdrawal in public had revived it. That mismatch explains their tense roundtable exchange in the October 22, 2026 episode of BBC One's The Celebrity Traitors, series two. Both later rejected suggestions of an off-screen feud.
What was the bouncing floor theory?
In the British celebrity version of The Traitors, some contestants secretly play Traitors, while the Faithful try to identify them. At the roundtable, suspicions are aired and one player is voted out. A weak theory can still hurt someone's chances.
During a challenge, the Faithful wore blindfolds while Traitors moved nearby. Miranda felt the floorboards shift and briefly suspected Joanne, who was standing beside her, of moving. After discussing the task, she accepted that the vibration could have come from elsewhere. She decided her own “bouncing floor theory” was debunked.
Why did the retraction make things worse?
At the roundtable Miranda acknowledged that she had got carried away, explained that the theory no longer held up and apologised. Joanne objected because a public retraction still introduced the original suspicion to everybody present.
Joanne insisted she had not moved and said being suspected of something she knew she had not done made her wary of Miranda. Miranda was saying, “I no longer believe it.” Joanne was asking, “Then why bring it up here?” They were answering different questions.
Why did viewers discuss it?
The logical trap is unusually fitting for a show about distrust: to announce that an allegation is dead, you must first repeat the allegation. Even an apology can sound like a tactical move. In the October 22 post-episode Reddit discussion, some viewers compared the pair to awkward coworkers, while others sympathised with Miranda or defended Joanne. Those are different observed reactions, not a unanimous verdict.
Jerry Hall, a Faithful, was voted out that evening. In the October 23 episode, Miranda was eliminated by an in-game “murder” ordered by the Traitors. That word describes the show's elimination mechanism, not real violence.
Did they actually fall out? Conclusion
According to reports published October 23–24, Joanne said in Instagram Stories that roundtable pressure had affected her response, but that she and Miranda laughed together afterward. Miranda also said she did not experience the exchange as Joanne snapping at her and recalled them laughing and clinking glasses that night. These are statements reported from their posts, not a claim to have directly replayed disappearing Stories or the complete episode.
Miranda tried to close a suspicion; Joanne heard it being reopened. The floorboards were the clue, but the conversation was the real trap.
