Description: NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. Here is how the free plan, five-hour refresh, weekly ceiling, older daily limits and Workspace accounts fit together in October 2026.

For consumer accounts, Gemini Notebook's AI allowance refreshes every five hours until the weekly ceiling is reached. It is not a promise of 50 free chats every day. To see your own next refresh, open Settings → Usage or read the notice beneath the chat box.

Free, Plus, Pro and Ultra: what changes?

Personal plan AI allowance Notebooks Sources per notebook
Free / Standard Standard 100 50
Google AI Plus 2× Standard 200 100
Google AI Pro 4× Standard 500 300
Google AI Ultra 5× or 20× Pro, depending on subscription 500 500 or 600

Those multipliers describe the compute allowance, not a fixed number of prompts, audio shows or videos. Notebook and source counts remain separate storage-style caps.

What changed on September 2?

Google announced the change on August 28, 2026, with a gradual consumer rollout beginning September 2 on web and mobile. Usage now depends on prompt complexity, conversation length, source count, and the model or Studio feature requested. One long research task can therefore consume more allowance than one short question. The precise cost of a future task cannot be derived from a published message count.

The apparent contradiction comes from Google's own documentation. The current English personal-plan comparison no longer gives a daily chat or Audio Overview table and says that plans with daily quotas reset those after 24 hours. The Japanese version of that comparison still displays figures such as 50 free chats and three Audio Overviews per day. A separate Workspace and education page also publishes daily figures by license.

These pages address overlapping but different situations. For a consumer's live compute budget, the dedicated Manage usage limits article is the most direct explanation, backed by the dated launch post . For a work or school account, check its own license table . Google does not display a consistent revision date across these help pages, so their publication order should not be invented.

Why am I still blocked after five hours?

A weekly ceiling sits above the shorter refresh. Hitting that ceiling can keep you waiting beyond one five-hour cycle. Google does not publish a universal midnight reset or an exact weekly reset day for every account. Check Settings → Usage for the current weekly allowance and the chat notice for your actual return time.

If a Video Overview or slide deck can wait, the web version offers Generate later in Studio. It queues an output to run when capacity returns; completion may take a couple of hours, and notifications are optional. The feature is currently web-only.

Bottom line

The free plan remains usable. Think in terms of five-hour compute refreshes plus a weekly ceiling, rather than guaranteed daily message counts. The fastest answer to “when can I use it again?” is on your own Usage screen.
