Description: Squadron 42 has moved from 2026 to April–June 2027. What Cloud Imperium confirmed, why backers remain skeptical, and which updates would make the new window credible.

Squadron 42 is officially targeting Q2 2027, April through June. Its previous 2026 target has changed. A developer support article updated October 13, 2026, repeats that window without giving a specific launch date.

Why did GTA 6 change the plan?

In an August 27 letter, Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts said the team had planned to launch in late 2026. He expected Grand Theft Auto VI's November release to dominate gaming coverage, leaving little attention for a separate big launch. The company therefore chose the second quarter of 2027.

That is the studio's stated scheduling reason, not independent proof that every mission and technical test is finished. Moving away from a major competitor may make commercial sense, but it does not establish development readiness. Equally, the postponement alone cannot prove that the game is in trouble.

Why do players expect another delay?

The August 27 discussion on r/starcitizen contains jokes about the date slipping again, requests to see substantial gameplay before trusting the timetable, and questions about why only a quarter was announced. These are real comments from individual participants, not a representative poll.

Squadron 42 is a single-player narrative campaign set in the Star Citizen universe. Progress on the separate online Star Citizen game is not, by itself, proof that the story campaign is ready to ship. Players want to know when they can play a complete adventure, not merely see another spaceship.

What should fans check next?

The official October 13 help page says the game is still in development and unavailable to download. It also directs people with eligible Squadron 42 pledge packages to check their RSI account's Games Library.

The useful milestones are a specific official release date, meaningful demonstrations of the campaign, and consistent updates to the release guidance. A quarter is a three-month target, not a guarantee.

Bottom line

April–June 2027 remains the official plan; another delay is a concern, not an announcement. Avoiding GTA 6 might solve a publicity problem. Players are still waiting for the more important detail: the boarding time.
