Description: Ubisoft still calls Beyond Good & Evil 2 a priority. A French investigation says full production has yet to begin. Here's what the evidence actually shows.
As of October 26, 2026, Ubisoft has not announced a cancellation. An October 21 investigation nevertheless suggests the final design may still be awaiting approval. Continuing development and approaching release are very different things.
Why the worry has returned
The game was first announced in 2008, reintroduced in 2017 and shown again in 2018. Public gameplay updates have since been scarce. Ubisoft's January 2026 cancellation of other projects renewed questions about its survival.
French outlet Origami interviewed people close to development for an October 21 report. A Reddit thread that day contained doubts the game would ever ship and discussion of its changing direction. These are genuine individual reactions, not a measure of every fan's opinion.
Official statements versus investigative reporting
On January 22, Ubisoft told Kotaku the game remained a priority within its open-world adventure strategy and belonged to Creative House 4. In September, Ubisoft writer Rik Godwin publicly said he had supported the project for months.
Origami reports that a connected multiplayer universe was planned around 2019–2022. The current direction reportedly emphasizes a story-driven solo adventure with optional co-op. At least 250 people in Montpellier are said to be involved as the team seeks an internal milestone to enter full production. Those staffing and milestone details are sourced reporting, not Ubisoft's official schedule.
Does pre-production mean nothing was built?
No. Prototypes, technology and gameplay experiments are genuine development. The concern is that the final game design might still lack approval. Ubisoft's website continues to describe System 3, space pirates and a prequel to the original game, but its older online-world pitch should not be treated as a locked 2026 feature list.
Look for a confirmed move into production, fresh gameplay and an updated official explanation—not a guessed release year.
Bottom line: The game is alive by Ubisoft's account, but survival alone does not guarantee a finish line. Before the pirates explore the galaxy, their game needs clearance to leave the launchpad.
