Age verification does not automatically let you chat with every friend on Roblox. Ordinary chat is limited to nearby age groups. Verified users aged 13 and older have another option, Trusted Connections, for communicating more flexibly with people they know.
Imagine finding your friend's avatar in the same experience you played yesterday, only to discover that talking is now the difficult part. For players who use Roblox as a place to meet friends, that feels like more than a settings change.
On January 7, 2026, Roblox announced the worldwide rollout of age checks for chat. Under the standard rules, a player aged 9–12 can speak with their own age bracket and its neighboring brackets. Trusted Connections provide another route for eligible users aged 13 and up, while safeguards for children and local rules still apply.
On April 13, the company announced Kids accounts for ages 5–8 and Select accounts for ages 9–15. Accounts without an age check cannot use communication features and can access only a more limited selection of experiences. Parents can approve particular games, but permission to enter a game is not the same thing as permission to chat.
In an October 4 Reddit discussion, one player complained that the chat update had made Roblox less enjoyable. Another defended age checks as a child-safety measure. Those are identifiable opinions, not evidence that everyone agrees.
If Roblox estimated your age incorrectly, official appeals and parental correction options are available. The first useful question is which age brackets you and your friend have been placed in, then which permitted connection methods apply. The game may still be there; the friendship deserves a clear answer too.
