That really was Sacha Baron Cohen. On the October 20, 2026 episode of NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor behind Borat and Ali G played cello in the string section during Beck's “In the Night.” He was neither a lookalike nor a comedian pretending to play. Cohen learned cello as a child.

What happened on the show?

Cohen appeared as a talk-show guest to promote Ali G: Who Iz I?. Beck was the musical guest on the same Tuesday episode, performing a song from his September album Ride Lonesome. The arrangement included strings, and Cohen joined the musicians behind the singer. The program normally begins at 11:35 p.m. Eastern. October 20 was the broadcast date; coverage and online discussion followed on October 21.

According to LateNighter, Cohen was one of eight string players. His appearance was not announced during the earlier interview or specially introduced before the song. Watching the singer rather than the backing musicians made him easy to miss.

Why is it funny if nobody told a joke?

In a real Beck subreddit discussion, a viewer questioned whether the cellist credited as Cohen actually looked like him. Another pointed to roughly 27 seconds into the video. These are identifiable, limited comments, not evidence of a global viral phenomenon.

Cohen normally attracts attention through extravagant disguises and uncomfortable interviews. Here he simply played a quiet musical part. A man famous for being impossible to ignore was almost impossible to spot when appearing as himself. The performance was not presented as a Borat prank.

He was a cellist before Borat

Cohen told journalist Maureen Dowd in a 2020 interview that his first television appearance was playing cello on Britain's Fanfare for Young Musicians. His skill predates his comedy fame. Beck's string-backed ballad is a natural setting for the instrument. The available reporting does not establish who first proposed the guest appearance.

They had performed together in 2006

In late October 2006, Beck played “Nausea” on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman. Cohen appeared in character as Borat, playing a berimbau, the Brazilian bow-shaped, single-string percussion instrument. Historical guest lists include Beck and Borat. Twenty years ago the strange character and unusual instrument demanded attention; in 2026 the real actor quietly played an instrument he knew well.

The answer

Look behind Beck at the string section. Cohen genuinely plays cello and has a musical connection to Beck dating back twenty years. In 2006 he surprised people by becoming somebody else; in 2026 he surprised them by being himself.
