Spoilers for light novel Volume 8, beyond the events shown in anime Season 3.

Remember the precious “dragon egg” Aqua keeps warming in KonoSuba Season 3? It does hatch. Just not into anything with scales, wings or a terrifying roar.

It is a yellow baby chicken. And it chooses Vanir as its parent.

This is an impressive amount of disappointment for one egg.

A dragon-sized name for a chicken-sized problem

Aqua paid a hefty sum believing she had a dragon egg. She fusses over it, pours energy into it and dreams of raising a magnificent beast. She even gives the future ruler a grand name: Kingsford Zeltman, better known as Emperor Zel.

The title says final boss. The creature says “peep.”

Season 3 shows Aqua nurturing the egg, including a memorable scene in Episode 8. The punchline arrives in the next stretch of the story, in the eighth light novel.

The worst possible first impression

When the egg finally cracks, Aqua and Vanir are fighting over it. The first person the chick sees is Vanir. The little bird imprints on him.

So Aqua buys the egg, tends to it and adds magic. Vanir happens to be in the right place at exactly the right second.

Aqua did the parenting. Vanir won the parent title.

Vanir even leaves behind an empty shell of himself so the chick has something familiar to sleep on. Somehow a masked demon has become the family's most unlikely nursery fixture.

And the magic? That part was not wasted. Zel carries an extraordinary amount of power for a chick, enough to unsettle Chomusuke and discourage monsters. But strong magic does not magically turn a chicken into a dragon or a fearsome fighter.

Aqua got tricked over the species, raised a magically overcharged chick and lost the parent competition to a demon. If anyone in this household deserves to cry, it might be her.
