At some point while watching KonoSuba, a perfectly reasonable question comes to mind:
Aqua is literally a goddess. Why doesn't she go beat the Demon King?
She was supposed to send Kazuma to another world, not get dragged into it herself. According to the official character profile, she can't return until the Demon King is defeated. [1]
And yet she seems remarkably comfortable spending her days eating, shopping, and causing trouble.
Being a goddess actually does make her powerful
Aqua is an Arch Priest, an advanced class whose main party role is healing. [1]
She can heal, resurrect, and use divine powers against undead creatures and demons. If you had to pick someone to keep a reckless adventuring party alive, she's an absurdly valuable teammate.
But there's a catch: being brilliant at purification and support is not the same as automatically winning every fight.
Some enemies are exactly the kind she's built to handle. Others aren't. The party's famously awkward encounters with giant frogs make that abundantly clear.
Having a powerful goddess in the group is not a universal “skip to final boss” button.
Getting to the Demon King is part of the problem
The Demon King's castle is defended by a barrier maintained by his generals. [2]
So this isn't just about Aqua challenging one opponent. The party has to get there, deal with the defenses, and survive the enemies along the way.
Aqua's divine abilities can matter enormously in that process. That still doesn't mean she can simply stroll inside and end the story by herself.
And the reverse claim—that she could never win alone—would go beyond what this question establishes. Combat power and the practical job of completing the quest aren't interchangeable.
Her priorities don't exactly scream “urgent mission”
Then there's the character herself.
The official synopsis for Season 3, Episode 7 has Aqua and Kazuma hopping between fancy restaurants after receiving a huge reward. Aqua even buys what she believes is a dragon egg. [3]
Defeat Demon King. Return home.
Simple enough.
First, though: a lavish dinner.
Then: dragon shopping.
The endgame can wait. Today's treat apparently cannot.
Kazuma's reluctance to charge into certain death makes sense. The strange part is that even the goddess who wants to leave often looks delighted with her current routine.
The entire party is built like this
Megumin has a devastating spell that leaves her unable to move afterward. Darkness can withstand punishment but struggles to land a hit. [1]
Aqua brings astonishing support magic and a spectacular talent for going off track.
Kazuma isn't surrounded by weak companions. He's surrounded by extremely capable companions whose abilities come with extremely inconvenient problems.
So yes, “Aqua, you're a goddess—go beat the Demon King!” is a fair reaction.
But if she did everything efficiently, KonoSuba would be a very short series.
