Vanir should be terrifying. He's a masked demon, a former general of the Demon King's army, and a self-proclaimed duke of Hell. [1]

He also has the power to see through people. [2]

And what does this intimidating figure do with it? He embarrasses Darkness in public and tries to keep a struggling magic-item shop afloat.

That's quite a career change.

The ultimate power to make someone say “SHUT UP”

In Season 3, Episode 7, the party visits Wiz's shop. Vanir offers to tell Darkness's fortune. [3]

Rather than reveal a brilliant battle strategy, he starts digging into things she'd very much prefer to keep private.

Then comes that unfinished remark about her mature body and what she does “alone at night…”

Wait. Alone doing what?

He never finishes the thought. It's a deliberately suggestive joke, not confirmation of any particular activity. Kazuma wants to know the rest; Darkness absolutely doesn't want anyone to hear it.

That's the delicious contradiction. Darkness can proudly announce the wildest fantasies imaginable. Actual personal secrets? Suddenly she wants privacy.

She'll describe the fantasy. She will not consent to the fact-check.

For Vanir, humiliation is practically a hobby

Official character descriptions say Vanir loves the negative emotions humans produce. [2]

So the routine makes perfect sense: spot an embarrassing secret, hint at it, enjoy the panic. An information-gathering superpower becomes his favorite source of entertainment.

This doesn't make his sight unlimited or every prediction infallible. It does mean he knows exactly where to poke.

What could be a fearsome advantage in battle gets used to ruin a friend's afternoon.

His toughest opponent might be retail

Wiz runs the shop where Vanir works. She's eager to help, but the business keeps losing money. [2]

In Episode 7, Vanir's attempt to stop her from making foolish purchases goes much too far: he keeps her working until she can barely function.

He solves the spending problem by breaking the shopkeeper.

Apparently even a duke of Hell needs lessons in management.

That's the charm of Vanir. His power is real. His status is real. Yet the problems consuming his days are a knight's embarrassing secrets and the accounts of a tiny store.

A demon who can see through people still can't easily see his shop turning a profit.
