Your included Copilot AI Credits reset at 00:00 UTC on the first day of every calendar month. That clock is separate from your subscription renewal date. Paying your next invoice, restarting a subscription or switching plans does not erase what you have already used this month.
The next reset and the timezone trap
As of October 17, 2026, the next scheduled reset is November 1 at 00:00 UTC. That is October 31 at 8 p.m. in New York (EDT), and November 1 at 9 a.m. in Japan. Unused included credits expire at the monthly boundary; they do not roll over. If your card is charged on the 20th, you still follow the first-of-the-month credit clock.
Which plan includes how much?
| Individual plan | Monthly price (USD) | Base | Flex | Total AI Credits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copilot Free | $0 | Not specified as a fixed number | — | Limited |
| Copilot Pro | $10 | 1,000 | 500 | 1,500 |
| Copilot Pro+ | $39 | 3,900 | 3,100 | 7,000 |
| Copilot Max | $100 | 10,000 | 10,000 | 20,000 |
One AI Credit represents $0.01 in usage accounting. A quick chat and a long agent run cost different amounts because model and token consumption differ. The base portion is spent first; the flex portion applies automatically and can change in future.
What if I upgrade with no credits left?
An upgrade takes effect immediately and gives you the higher plan's remaining allowance after subtracting usage already recorded this month. It does not create a second, untouched monthly allowance. GitHub charges the price difference. Downgrades and cancellations generally take effect at the end of the billing cycle. Extra paid usage has its own budget and charges.
Free accounts and old annual subscribers
Copilot Free still includes up to 2,000 code completions monthly plus limited AI Credits for chat and agents, with automatic model selection. Current plan documentation does not publish one fixed credit number for Free; older references to “50 premium requests” describe the previous accounting model. A special exception applies to certain existing annual Pro and Pro+ subscriptions: they retain legacy premium-request billing until the annual term ends.
How to check the right number
Look at your GitHub usage dashboard for credits consumed and remaining, and check your billing page separately for the next payment date. Update your editor and Copilot extension if you still see obsolete request counters. If you're at the limit, wait for the UTC reset, compare the unused capacity of a higher tier, or review the budget for separately billed usage.
Bottom line
Calendar-month reset, subscription-anniversary payment. Those are two different clocks. Upgrading may unlock additional capacity now; it does not wipe the month's consumption history.
