Description: Does Family or Premium now share Copilot with everyone? Compare today's AI access, the reported future rollout, monthly credits and the conflicting OneDrive transition dates.

As of October 17, 2026, Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook remains a benefit for the subscription owner. Family and Premium members can share the Office apps and storage, but the current Microsoft support pages do not grant each invited member the owner's paid AI entitlement. Reports about an upcoming AI-sharing change describe a future rollout, not a feature already enabled for everyone.

Check the plan, then check whose account is signed in

Plan Paid Copilot in Office apps Share Office apps New shared storage
Free Microsoft account Free Copilot experiences subject to their own limits No 5 GB free
Personal Subscription owner No 1 TB personal
Family Subscription owner Up to five additional people 2 TB pooled
Premium Subscription owner, with broader AI allowances Up to five additional people 2 TB pooled
Pro Subscription owner, with the highest allowances Up to five additional people 5 TB pooled

The storage figures describe the new subscription arrangement; existing customers have transition rules. An invited family member may still use free Copilot Chat where available. That is different from receiving paid Copilot buttons and credits inside desktop Office apps. Signing into the same computer with multiple accounts does not turn one paid AI license into six licenses.

Did Microsoft announce family-wide AI sharing?

Reports of emails sent around October 8 say Microsoft plans to let Family subscribers share Copilot benefits and AI usage with household members. Those reports say more information will follow before the change takes effect. In contrast, Microsoft's pricing FAQ, subscription-sharing guidance and AI-limits page updated in October 2026 all still say AI benefits are for the subscription owner only. The public pages checked on October 17 do not establish an activation date, supported-country list or exact shared quota. Treat the email as advance notice and look for the subsequent account-specific notice.

The storage change is real—but even Microsoft's dates differ

Family and Premium are moving from up to six separate 1 TB allowances to 2 TB shared across the household; the new Pro pool is 5 TB. Files and mailboxes remain private to each person. New purchases, repurchases after expiry and certain plan switches may adopt the new model before older subscriptions renew.

Microsoft's dedicated Changes to Microsoft 365 storage article says October 8, 2026 for new plans and the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027 for existing Family/Premium customers. Its Microsoft storage quotas page instead says October 7, 2026 and renewals from April 1, 2027. We prioritize the dedicated change notice for general guidance, disclose the earlier dates and recommend checking the actual checkout or renewal notice for borderline cases. Neither set of dates is an announced launch date for family-wide Copilot.

When do AI credits reset?

An older Microsoft FAQ describes 60 monthly AI credits for the Personal subscriber and Family subscription owner, replenished at the beginning of each month. Microsoft's October 2026 guidance distinguishes monthly AI credits from feature-specific limits, which vary by feature and plan. It would be misleading to promise 60 actions in every Copilot feature, or 60 credits to each of six members. Review Services & subscriptions in your Microsoft account for current usage. Regional age requirements and app availability can also affect access.

Bottom line

If an invited family member cannot use paid Copilot in Word today, that matches Microsoft's published current policy. Keep three things separate: Office app sharing, storage pooling and the future AI-sharing proposal. Wait for a concrete effective-date notice before assuming the paid Copilot entitlement is shared.
