According to James Acaster, the first immunity shield was only part of the story. On 9 October 2026, BBC One aired episode four of the second series of The Celebrity Traitors. Singer James Blunt argued for the banishment of actor Julie Hesmondhalgh. Julie then revealed she was a Faithful, not a Traitor. An interview with Acaster published on 15 October offered a missing explanation.
What viewers saw
The game divides contestants into secret Traitors and Faithfuls who vote to banish suspects at the Round Table. A shield provides protection in certain circumstances. In the broadcast edit, Blunt suggested that Julie receiving the first shield after being judged the most trustworthy might conceal a twist: perhaps she was actually a Traitor. That leap from trust to suspicion seemed unusually convoluted.
What Acaster says was cut
During the early shoulder-tap selection of Traitors, Blunt reportedly told Julie who he suspected. Later Acaster suggested that Traitors who did not yet know their allies might avoid sharing theories for fear of accusing a teammate. Julie subsequently described Blunt to the group as someone who was not sharing his theories, Acaster said.
Blunt remembered telling Julie his suspicions. To him, her public statement contradicted their earlier private conversation. Acaster says Blunt presented that contradiction at the Round Table as evidence she was lying. That makes the vote less about a bizarre shield conspiracy and more about a disputed exchange.
Why the moment is so ironic
A game about detecting deception turned on who remembered a conversation correctly. Acaster himself had been recruited as a Traitor, despite wanting to play detective as a Faithful. His advice may have contributed to suspicion falling on an innocent contestant. There is no evidence that he deliberately engineered a trap.
What the edit proves—and what it does not
The missing exchange is Acaster’s account, not independently verified unaired footage. The production told PA Media that contestants experience different conversations and that an episode cannot include every minute of a day; the Round Table edit selects the salient arguments behind decisions. That response does not establish the intention of the editors or the motivation of every voter.
Conclusion
Blunt apparently saw a contradiction between what Julie told the group and what he remembered telling her privately. The shield theory dominated the televised explanation. The 9 October episode and 15 October interview should be read together. This account was checked on 18 October 2026; the unaired scene was not directly viewed.
