Description: Medalist paused publication in September 2026. Here's what its publisher said about returning, what fans actually fear, and why the February 2027 movie is a separate question.

Medalist is on an open-ended manga hiatus, not under an announced cancellation. The manga's official account said on September 4, 2026 that publication would pause for production reasons, while the editorial team works toward a return. No restart date had been announced by October 16. The anime film is still listed for February 19, 2027.[1][2]

The announcement, without the rumor mill

Medalist follows Inori Yuitsuka, a young figure skater determined to compete, and Tsukasa Akeuraji, a former skater who becomes her coach. Their ambitions are tied together: each new routine tests the work they have done away from the spotlight. The series runs in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon, and volume 15 was released in Japan on July 22, 2026.[3]

On September 4, the manga team announced a break attributed to production circumstances. The publisher said it would support creator Tsurumaikada and prepare for serialization to resume. The author's accompanying message looked ahead to the theatrical film.[1] This is evidence of an intended return, but it does not give a timetable or a private explanation of what happened behind the scenes.

Why are readers anxious?

In a September 4 discussion on r/Medalist, some readers worried about a long hiatus or the story never reaching its conclusion. Others hoped the pause would allow the creator to plan the demanding competition chapters. Several mentioned concern for the creator's health.[4] Those are real individual reactions, not a diagnosis and not a poll of the entire fandom.

The anxiety makes sense in a skating story: a performance is built across training sessions, setbacks and choices, and readers want to see the landing. A pause in publication and an abandoned ending are different things. The official notice supports the former; the latter is a fear, not an announced outcome.

Does the anime movie face the same delay?

The anime's official news page announced a February 19, 2027 Japanese theatrical release on August 30. It continued publishing movie-related updates and ticket information in September.[2] The manga hiatus announcement does not say the movie is delayed. The film adapts material from the story already told, following the second TV season, rather than depending on an unwritten weekly chapter.

Dates may still change, as any release schedule can. For the manga, watch Monthly Afternoon and the manga's official account; for the film, watch the anime's official news page. A third television season has its own announcement process and should not be assumed from the film date.

The answer for now

The manga is paused with a stated plan to return; its restart date is unknown; the film remains scheduled for February 19, 2027. Skaters sometimes reset before a difficult jump. That image is a way to think about the wait, not a claim about the creator's reasons. The next official update—not the loudest prediction—will tell readers when the story is ready to take the ice again.
