Description: The plan was to find an affordable sweater for a long coat. After a string of failed outfit recommendations and a ¥3,990 UNIQLO price check, a plain white thrift find for ¥700 seemed perfect. Then came the sleeves.

A long coat was already hanging in the wardrobe. The missing piece was a simple, good-looking layer to wear underneath in winter.

Easy, right? Somehow it turned into an audition in which every outfit got eliminated.

1. Liking a suit doesn't mean dressing for a board meeting every weekend

The first ideas were tailored coats, trousers, and leather shoes. They followed one clue: the shopper liked the way they looked in a suit.

But liking a suit is not the same as wanting to look ready for a board meeting on a Saturday. The suggestions switched to vintage work jackets, chunky sweaters, and retro cardigans.

Four photos appeared. The verdict: “None of them.”

Four outfits, zero survivors. Spectacularly efficient, just not helpful.

2. One brand name finally pointed in the right direction

The key clue was CLEL, a menswear brand sold on Japan's ZOZOTOWN marketplace.[1]

The appeal was interesting proportions, shorter jackets, texture, and modern dark-toned casual clothing—not simply formalwear or old-school vintage. Several CLEL jackets finally got a positive reaction.

Then came the next sentence: “But I already have a long coat. What I really need is knitwear underneath.”

The entire search had been happening in the wrong department.

3. A ¥3,990 UNIQLO sweater becomes the benchmark

On October 17, 2026, UNIQLO Japan listed its washable Milano-rib crewneck sweater at ¥3,990, with machine-washing guidance.[2]

A cheaper secondhand knit sounded sensible. The trick is comparing clothes that do the same job: for winter, check long sleeves, warmth, thickness, fit, pilling, and care labels.

A low price tag cannot magically produce sleeves.

4. Then: plain white, ¥700

“There's a plain white secondhand one for ¥700. I'll just go with that, haha.”

The colour worked. The design was simple. The sticker-price difference from ¥3,990 was ¥3,290. The wallet was already throwing a party.

The search was over—or so it seemed.

5. “It's short-sleeved, though”

SHORT-SLEEVED?!

We started looking for winter knitwear and almost finished with a warm-weather top.

A ¥700 plain white short-sleeved shirt can still be useful for layering or summer outfits. It doesn't replace a warm long-sleeved sweater. That ¥3,290 gap compares different types of clothing, not equal winter protection; the conversation established a promising find, not a confirmed purchase.

The practical rule: when a thrift bargain looks perfect, check the season, fabric, condition, and sleeve length before celebrating.

Coat? Sorted. Style? Finally identified. Affordable find? Yes.

Winter sleeves? Still missing.
