Description: Meet the song behind the three dancing cats, the AI animation that made them recognizable, and the real September 2026 remixes. The music and the meme have different timelines.

The “La Calabaza” cat meme combines Pumpky’s dance track with a clip of three AI-animated cats moving in sync. It spread through Spanish-language social posts in September 2026, with people transplanting the cats into new scenes and even switching the soundtrack. The title means “the pumpkin” in Spanish. The stars, inconveniently for any pumpkin expecting a lead role, are cats.

The song came before the cats

The track is “LA CALABAZA (TINIEBLA Edit)” by Pumpky. Amazon Music lists its release date as January 8, 2026. Pumpky’s official YouTube channel published a music video on September 10. Those dates refer to the track and its official video, not the first cat meme.

Mexican coverage describes Pumpky as an independent producer who had been sharing Latin dance music since 2024. The repeated phrase “La Calabaza” is associated with the producer’s name. You can understand the meme without translating every lyric: the repeated beat sets up the dance, while the synchronized animals provide the absurd visual payoff.

Where did the dancing trio come from?

Reports identify @meowtakeover, an account known for AI-generated kitten videos, as the source of the three-cat dance clip that helped the song take off. Versions show the cats performing together, sometimes with a hat-wearing cat among them. Reposts then put the same trio in different places and situations.

There is an independently dated trace: a Tenor GIF titled “Gatitos La Calabaza” was created on September 1, 2026. It shows that the dancing-cat image was being reused by then. It does not establish the upload date of the first video, which the available reporting does not pin down.

A remix that actually happened

On September 12, Infobae reported that Mexican singer Kenia Os had shared fan versions in Instagram Stories. One featured two women imitating the cat choreography with the three cats appearing on screen. Its caption contrasted having countless tasks with choosing to dance instead. The version used “Malas Mañas,” a Kenia Os and Xavi track, rather than Pumpky’s original sound.

That example explains the format better than a generic “viral cat” label. The cats are portable: creators can keep the dance, replace the setting or audio, and make the joke about procrastination. A serious to-do list meets three animals who have scheduled a dance break.

How big, and where?

Mexican outlets covered the trend between September 8 and 15, 2026. El Informador described many remixes and millions of views; Infobae documented the named fan-and-singer interaction. Those reports support a substantial Spanish-language circulation, especially in Mexican coverage. They do not provide an audited worldwide view total or a country-by-country ranking.

The answer

“La Calabaza” is an older Pumpky song that acquired a new visual identity when three AI cats started dancing to it in September. The song’s January release and the meme’s September breakout are separate events. You arrive wondering what “pumpkin” means and leave with three cats taking over your mental playlist.
