Description: Does the Attack Titan’s future-memory power contradict Eren and Zeke exploring Grisha’s past? A spoiler-filled guide to inherited memories, the Paths, Historia’s hand, and the father-son causal loop.

The Attack Titan can glimpse a future inheritor’s memories. Sounds like an outrageous protagonist-only upgrade. So why does Eren spend chapters 120–121 looking at his father’s past? Did the story accidentally give its time-travel rules a roundhouse kick?

The distinction is simple: inheriting memories from earlier Titan holders is one mechanism; the Attack Titan’s access to memories of later holders is another. Eren and Zeke’s trip through Grisha’s memories also involves the Founding Titan and the Paths. The real headache begins when those mechanisms feed back into each other.

Two directions, two kinds of memory

Titan inheritors may receive fragments from predecessors. Grisha reveals that the Attack Titan has an additional property: it can glimpse memories of future inheritors. Neither ability means an unrestricted menu of every event in history. Memories arrive in pieces, and characters can act on only what they have seen.

Eren looking backward and Grisha looking forward therefore coexist perfectly well. Unfortunately, that is the easy part.

Zeke organized a family intervention and invited causality

In chapters 120–121, Zeke takes Eren through their father’s memories, hoping to prove Grisha brainwashed his younger son. Instead, he watches Eren urge a hesitant Grisha to take the Founding Titan from the Reiss family.

They need not be physically walking through the past for this to work. They are examining memories inside the Paths. Grisha can seemingly recognize Zeke because he receives the later Eren’s viewpoint as a future memory. It is less a time machine than a deeply cursed family photo-sharing account. Precisely how each image reaches Grisha remains an interpretive detail.

The moment at Historia’s hand

During the award ceremony in chapter 90, touching Historia unlocks Grisha’s memories for Eren. But some of the memories Grisha had experienced came from his future successor—Eren himself.

The information takes a spectacular detour: future Eren’s experience → Grisha sees it as a future memory → younger Eren encounters it inside his father’s past memory. Eren does not simply open an app labeled “Tomorrow.” He gets spoilers about himself forwarded through Dad. The family group chat has become a supernatural data center.

The real paradox: how did Eren inherit the power in the first place?

Grisha had to seize the Founder and later pass his Titans to Eren for the grown Eren to reach the Paths. Yet the grown Eren helped push Grisha toward that very decision. Cause creates effect; effect helps create cause.

The reading most consistent with the story is a single self-consistent history that always included future Eren’s influence, not an original timeline followed by an edited rerun. This is a causal loop. Asking “What happened on the first run?” assumes the one thing this model does not contain: a first run. Congratulations, a shonen power explanation has turned into a philosophy seminar.

Chapter 139 makes the loop much darker

The finale connects the Founder’s unusual relationship with time to Eren diverting Dina’s Titan away from Bertholdt, leading into the events of Carla’s death. That is a separate issue involving the Founding Titan, not proof that the Attack Titan alone can rewrite any year on demand.

The boy who shouted about freedom becomes entangled in the causes of his own past. And Zeke, convinced he was exposing his father’s manipulation, ends up helping create the circumstances he wanted to investigate. He scheduled family therapy; the entire timeline showed up.
