Description: Why is an ATM spraying banknotes in a security-camera clip? Trace the Instagram origin, Russian-language remakes and a separate 2025 South African hoax.

ATM Glitch is an AI-generated video meme in which a cash machine shoots out banknotes until someone falls into a pile of money. The black-and-white CCTV-style clips circulating in October 2026 do not show a real bank malfunction. They imagine the one technical failure people would welcome.

Why is it funny?

The early caption says “The only glitch I'm praying for this year.” Usually an ATM error costs you time or money. Here it apparently makes you rich. A fixed overhead camera makes the scene look serious before the impossible cash storm begins. MakeViral describes comments such as “MINE,” a playful wish for the same luck, not the location of a real ATM.

Origin and spread

MakeViral traces an early version of this black-and-white format to an October 6, 2026 Instagram reel credited to @ehustlr and @aicreatedthis_. @laughtercolours reposted the idea on October 13. Russian-speaking creator @prostoanastasiya_ shared a one-photo remake on October 17; @yaaramiww posted a ginger-cat version on October 19. Russian template pages call it “Банкомат,” meaning ATM.

Jump on the Trend recorded 979,541 likes for the October 17 remake and 4,352 for the cat post on October 23. These are third-party snapshots of individual posts, not current official counters or worldwide totals. MakeViral mentions reposts in the United States, Nigeria, South Africa, Pakistan and India, without comparable national audience figures.

What about South Africa in 2025?

Videos supposedly showing cash pouring out of machines bearing a real South African bank's name circulated in October and November 2025. Africa Check declared them AI fabrications on November 25, citing generator watermarks and impossible movements. Those clips were sometimes presented as news. The 2026 meme instead plays with an absurd wish; visual similarity does not establish a shared original upload.

How to use and recognize it

Look for a fixed grayscale camera, an ordinary withdrawal and a sudden blast of bills. Remakes substitute a person's face or a pet. Label AI-created footage and get permission for other people's photos. If a repost claims a named bank really malfunctioned, check the bank's official notices.

Conclusion

ATM Glitch turns a dreaded machine failure into an impossible payday. From an Instagram wish to Russian-language remakes and a cat version, the joke keeps escalating. A real bank would be in trouble; the cat just wants its wages.
