Description: ChatGPT for Word works with Free accounts, but Word tasks use plan limits and may share credits with Codex. See the September launch, October 1 admin change, model differences and why the add-in might be missing.

Yes, the Word add-in is available on every ChatGPT plan, including Free. Access is not unlimited: Word tasks consume usage under your plan. On eligible paid plans, Word draws from the same allowance as Codex and other premium tools. From October 1, 2026, Word access became enabled by default in organizational workspaces, although administrators can still turn it off.

What launched, and what changed in October?

OpenAI announced ChatGPT for Word on September 17, 2026. It opens a sidebar in Microsoft Word for rewriting selected paragraphs, summarizing the open document, drafting from notes and adjusting headings. The Microsoft add-in is shared with Excel and PowerPoint. October 1 changed the default workspace access setting. It did not automatically install an add-in on every employee's computer or override Microsoft 365 policies.

Which plan and model can I use?

ChatGPT plan Word access Model and allowance
Free Yes GPT-5.6 Luna; included limits apply
Go Yes GPT-5.6 Luna; plan limits apply
Plus Yes GPT-5.6 Sol by default; eligible choice among four models; shares agentic allowance
Pro Yes Sol by default; model choice and shared allowance apply
Business, Enterprise, Edu Yes Subject to workspace permissions, billing agreement and model availability

The personal-plan credit guide lists Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra for eligible Plus/Pro Word users. Availability can vary by feature and region. Do not assume the Word picker offers the same models as an ordinary ChatGPT conversation.

If it is free, why are there token prices?

Word counts the text it reads and generates. Included plan usage is consumed first. If you exhaust it, supported accounts can continue with purchased credits. Credit purchases are available only to a limited group of Free and Go users; availability and prices vary. Free access does not promise unlimited free edits. Plus and Pro users should also know that a lengthy Word session may leave less included usage for Codex or Work. The official guidance gives no universal daily Word message count or fixed reset hour: check your account's Usage page instead of relying on a number from somebody else's screenshot.

Why can't I find ChatGPT in Word?

Install the ChatGPT add-in through Microsoft Marketplace, open it from the Word ribbon and sign in. For company accounts, both Microsoft 365 add-in approval and the ChatGPT workspace setting matter. A deliberate admin restriction can override the October default. Add-in conversations are separate from your usual ChatGPT history, and memory does not transfer into them. Review significant edits before sharing the document.

Bottom line

Word is open to Free users; the allowance is still metered. The useful question is no longer just “Can I install it?” but “Which account am I signed into, and how much shared usage do I have left?”
