Why wait if the game is available?
Discovery is central to Subnautica: unfamiliar creatures and environments work best when you encounter them for yourself. Early Access offers a playable, evolving game, but some people want their first expedition to include the completed story. Unknown Worlds confirms that Subnautica 2 is already available through Steam, Xbox and Epic Games.[1]
In an October 4 Reddit discussion, one player said they had deliberately avoided gameplay videos and pictures to preserve that first-playthrough surprise. They asked when the next big update would arrive and explained they intended to wait for the complete game. Replies suggested another year or two might be needed, but those were personal guesses, not official dates.[3]
What has actually been announced?
On July 7, the studio outlined version 1.1 Adaptive Measures for July 8, then version 1.2, followed by Early Access 2 later in 2026.[2] Version 1.2 Buddy System arrived on August 19 with additional cooperative-play features.[1]
On October 15, the studio published “Voyage to Early Access 2 Begins.” Creative director Anthony Gallegos introduced a new developer-vlog series and previews of the next major update.[1] That is concrete development progress, but it does not establish a 1.0 launch date.
Which announcement matters next?
Keep three milestones separate: the Early Access 2 update date, the new exploration and story content it brings, and the eventual full-release date. A bigger ocean does not automatically mean a finished expedition.
Bottom line: a major Early Access update is planned for 2026, while the complete game's release date remains unannounced in the sources checked. You can dive today. Waiting until the whole voyage is ready is a different choice—and the next update alone cannot make it for you.
