What happened?

October 24, 2026 was Pythagorean Triple Day. The numbers 10, 24 and 26 fit a right triangle. Reddit's bigger 'discovery' was that switching to the day-first date format did not break the equation. The comment section responded as though addition itself had just been invented.

The math and the next date

The arithmetic is 10² + 24² = 100 + 576 = 676 = 26². Oxford's Mathematical Institute explained it on October 21, and Thailand's science education institute did so on October 24. Americans write 10/24/26; much of the world writes 24/10/26. Addition does not care. Calling this the last such day of the century assumes the last two digits of the year represent the hypotenuse. The next is March 4, 2105: 3² + 4² = 5².

What commenters actually joked about

On October 24, a r/notinteresting commenter pointed out that DD/MM/YY worked too. Replies mockingly demanded a research paper; another celebrated Reddit's rediscovery of the commutative property. In r/mathmemes, somebody joked they were already booked in 2105. In r/NonPoliticalTwitter, a commenter proposed a calendar containing only this date. These are paraphrases of publicly indexed comments, not invented quotations or claims to have viewed every attached image.

Original comic scene

ORIGINAL SATIRE — Chair: 'They reversed the date!' Mathematician: 'The sum still works.' Chair: 'What breakthrough explains it?' Mathematician: 'Addition.' Secretary: 'Shall I book the next conference for 2105?' The dialogue is fictional. The actual comedy lies in promoting an elementary rule into a grand international discovery.
