Description: Players have reached the edge of Subnautica 2's current Early Access adventure. Here's what Unknown Worlds has promised for the next major expansion, what the October patch actually changed, and why fans are watching for a date.
More biomes, creatures and story are on the roadmap for Subnautica 2's larger expansions. Unknown Worlds has described that destination clearly. As of October 13, 2026, its published updates haven't pinned down a calendar date for the next big content drop.
When you've explored everything you can reach
On October 12, a player asked Reddit when the next major update would arrive. They said they still loved the game but were running out of new things to discover. One reply came from someone taking a break until the next biome; another player had finished building their base and was waiting to go further.
That's a particularly sharp kind of waiting in an exploration game. You can make an impressive underwater home, but eventually you want a reason to leave it and swim into somewhere unsettlingly unfamiliar.
A hotfix is progress, not another ocean
Unknown Worlds' May 15 roadmap separates smaller improvements and bug fixes from major expansions. The bigger drops are meant to expand the world with biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles and another chapter of the story.
Players have received updates in the meantime. August's Buddy System update focused on playing together. On October 6, a follow-up hotfix tackled voice-chat detection, a Tadpole vehicle teleporting incorrectly, and resource scans, among other issues. Those are tangible improvements for people already in the water, just a different kind of update from discovering a new region.
In the Reddit discussion, people guessed November or December. Those dates are community predictions; the roadmap itself remains flexible. An official announcement will be the useful signal for anyone planning a return dive.
What to look forward to
The intriguing part of the roadmap isn't simply a larger map. It is the promise that exploration, creatures and the next story chapter will grow together. What might be lurking beyond today's boundaries? That's the question a good Subnautica update ought to leave hanging.
If you've already exhausted the current routes, there's nothing wrong with surfacing for a while. The next reason to be afraid of deep water is something worth coming back for.
