Description: The world's heaviest pumpkin is real. Reddit's October 18–19 reactions, however, went from real estate to boating to a Starship Troopers monster. Here's what was verified and what was just a joke.
Ron Wallace grew a 3,156-pound (1,431.5-kg) pumpkin in Rhode Island, officially setting the world weight record on October 10, 2026. When a photograph circulated on Reddit on October 18, the conversation took a hard left: people started discussing housing, boats and alien bugs. This is what happens when a vegetable needs its own freight quote.
The record is real—and the previous one lasted a week
Guinness World Records confirmed the result in its October 14 report. Britain's Ian Paton had set a record of 1,295.8 kg on October 3; Wallace passed it seven days later. Wallace also made pumpkin history in 2006 and 2012. Guinness estimates that his latest specimen could supply more than 3,000 pies. At that scale, “one pumpkin” sounds less like a grocery list and more like a procurement contract.
Three actual Reddit reactions
“Now preserve it and turn it into a house!” One commenter on the October 18 r/interestingasfuck thread skipped the recipe stage and went straight to property development. An open-plan kitchen might be tricky when the entire building is the kitchen ingredient.
“What the hell do you do with this thing once it starts to rot?” A reply suggested an annual event in which giant pumpkins are hollowed out into canoe-like craft. That was a commenter's example, not a confirmed plan for Wallace's record holder. The pumpkin has not even reached the dining table and someone has already proposed a river crossing.
“That's the brain bug from Starship Troopers actually.” Another commenter saw a resemblance to the creature from the sci-fi film. From produce to extraterrestrial threat assessment in one scroll: a remarkable promotion for a squash.
Original jokes from this article—not user comments
Real-estate agent: “How many rooms?” Buyer: “One.” Agent: “Well, technically it's one gourd.”
Shipping desk: “How many items?” Customer: “One pumpkin.” Desk: “I'm going to need the weight before the item count.”
Halloween organizer: “Can we carve a face?” Crew: “We'll file the construction permit first.”
The punchline
The official achievement is a 1,431.5-kg pumpkin. The online achievement is persuading strangers to treat it as a houseboat, a movie monster and a zoning problem. Somewhere, an ordinary pumpkin is quietly grateful to be sold by the slice.
