Description: Riot has set an end date for League Classic's current run. Here is what January 6 means, why queues change earlier in some regions, and how Classic-specific refunds work.
Short answer: League Classic's current run ends January 6, 2027, according to Riot's October 14 announcement and support page. Regular League of Legends continues. Riot would like to bring Classic back, potentially as a temporary event, but has not committed to a return date or a permanent replacement.[1][2]
The end date is not the only deadline
The free Classic Pass Act II has its own schedule. Progress ends January 4, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time, and the pass deactivates January 5 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. That gives players less time to earn and claim rewards than the headline January 6 availability date might suggest. Riot advises checking the in-game schedule because dates can change.[2]
Why Classic mattered in the first place
This was not a museum-quality copy of a single old patch. Riot built a collection of early League experiences: a map resembling the old Summoner's Rift, vintage items, runes and masteries, slower fights, and a starting roster of 60 champions. Some choices drew from several early seasons rather than Season 3 alone. More champions are still planned through patch 26.23, even with the end approaching.[1][3]
Why some players feel the experiment ended too soon
In an October 16 discussion, players criticized the short lifespan, the incomplete early roster and the lack of a conventional ranked queue. Riot's original design post explicitly prioritized playing with friends over an intense ranked grind. That contrast helps explain the disappointment: one group wanted to compete seriously in the old game; the designers were building a nostalgic social mode. This is an interpretation of the documented positions, not a proven explanation for player retention.[3][4]
Riot's stated reason is narrower: many people enjoyed the initial return, then moved back to other League modes. It is reducing queue availability where participation has dropped. Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and several other regions move to scheduled queue windows; Japan and MENA become custom-match-only with patch 26.21. Custom matches remain available across regions during the current run.[1]
What happens to paid Classic items?
Act II's pass is free. Riot is refunding selected Classic-only cosmetics that will become unusable, with different treatment for portraits, chromas and bundles. Some portrait RP refunds are scheduled by November 30, 2026. Certain cash purchases require contacting Player Support within 30 days of the notice if you want a refund to the original payment method. Not every purchase has the same rule: read the item-by-item support policy rather than assuming your whole account is refunded.[2]
The takeaway
Play the remaining Classic matches while the relevant queue exists in your region, finish the free pass before its earlier deadline, and check any eligible purchases. Riot has left the door open for a comeback. The irony is that a mode built to rewind League's clock has given its fans a very modern problem: a countdown timer.
