Description: Green patches or odd colours in iPhone 18 Pro 2x photos? See exactly what iOS 27.0.1 fixes, how to update safely, and why some post-update reports need separate investigation.

Apple fixed a colour artifact affecting some 2x photos on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices in iOS 27.0.1. The release notes specify certain lighting conditions and f/1.48. The update was released on September 28, 2026; it is not a blanket fix for every green photo or green line on a display.[1][2]

Match the symptom before blaming the camera

A photo may look fine in the viewfinder, then show an odd green patch after capture. Owners described this behaviour in September, particularly against pale backgrounds. Those posts are firsthand accounts, not an official reproduction test or a measure of how many phones are affected.[4]

Apple's confirmed scope is unusually narrow: iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max + 2x capture + f/1.48 + particular lighting, on a small number of units. The company has not identified the internal processing step or hardware component responsible. “Green” describes some users' images; Apple calls it a colour artifact.[1]

What you see What it suggests
Colour blotch inside a saved 2x photo on an affected Pro model May match Apple's iOS 27.0.1 fix
A vertical green line visible on the screen even outside Photos Treat as a separate display symptom
Odd colour at 1x, in video, or on a different iPhone Record the conditions; do not assume the same cause

Check, update and compare without erasing anything

  1. In Settings > General > About, confirm your iPhone model and iOS version. If an affected Pro model still runs iOS 27.0, check for the corrective update.
  2. Keep an unedited copy of an affected picture. In Photos, open it and swipe up or tap the information button to view the metadata available for that file. Note the zoom, aperture and time only if shown.[3]
  3. Back up to iCloud or a computer. Connect to Wi-Fi and power, then go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an official release that includes the iOS 27.0.1 fix.[2]
  4. Afterwards, take ordinary 1x and 2x photos of the same subject if convenient. You can compare the result without pointing the lens at dangerous bright light or trying to force the bug.
  5. If the defect continues, record the model, version, capture settings and an original sample for Apple Support. Remove location information and identifiable faces before posting samples publicly.

Temporary workaround and reports after the patch

If a picture matters and the 2x result looks unreliable, shoot at 1x and crop later. This is a practical way to avoid the stated 2x condition, not an Apple-certified repair. Cropping changes framing and may reduce usable detail; retain the original file.

Reports are mixed. One user said the update appeared to resolve the colour problem; another reported green photos after 27.0.1 while using an external monocular and focal lengths that did not neatly match Apple's 2x/f/1.48 conditions. These are different observations, so the second report does not by itself disprove the narrower official fix.[5][6]

A standard software update does not call for Erase All Content and Settings. That action deletes local data. Nor has Apple said the patch retroactively repairs already affected images. Preserve the original photo before editing; the Photos app provides a way to revert edits.[7]

Bottom line

For a Pro-series iPhone showing colour patches in 2x still photos, check for iOS 27.0.1 or later first. If the problem persists, distinguish a saved-image defect from a screen defect and document the precise shooting conditions before seeking support.
