Description: Japan's EPA caregiver status, the four-year limit and possible extra year, the 2027 national exam, alternative work status, and what an international relationship might actually face.

The short answer

Japan's certified care worker exam is generally held once a year. EPA care worker candidates from Vietnam normally have four years to qualify; a conditional one-year extension can offer another attempt. Someone who failed in their fourth year in 2026 might be preparing for January 31, 2027. That makes the next exam important, not a guaranteed deportation date—and certainly not a scheduled breakup.

1. EPA is a pathway, not the professional license

EPA refers to the international framework through which Japan accepts prospective nurses and certified care workers. The professional qualification sought is the Japanese certified care worker license. A candidate typically works and trains under the residence status called Designated Activities. Having the national license changes the available longer-term employment options.

2. What happens after four years?

For Vietnamese EPA care worker candidates, the normal framework allows up to four years. Japan provides a special additional year for eligible unsuccessful candidates. Exam performance, the receiving facility's improved training arrangements and the applicable approval process matter. This extension is not automatic.

That distinction is crucial: hearing “an extension is possible” is not proof that a particular person has permission to stay until a particular date. The residence card and actual approval establish the individual timeline.

3. One exam a year is a rather brutal calendar

The next, 39th national certified care worker exam is scheduled for January 31, 2027, with results on March 23, 2027. Applications ran from July 22 to September 2, 2026, and registration has closed. Missing registration can matter as much as studying.

A partial-pass system also began with the 2026 exam: qualifying passed sections may be exempted in subsequent sittings under the official rules. Individual results determine whether that helps.

4. If the next attempt fails

Official guidance explains that, after the special extension and an unsuccessful exam, departure by the end of the authorized stay is normally required unless another lawful residence basis is secured.

A possible alternative is switching to Specified Skilled Worker (i), nursing care. Certain EPA candidates who completed at least three years and ten months of appropriate work and training and earned at least half the national exam passing score with points in every subject group may qualify for exemptions from specified tests. There are additional employment and immigration requirements; approval is individual. It is an option to investigate, not a guaranteed workaround.

5. Suddenly the romance has an immigration subplot

Then comes the unexpected thought: “If we date and the visa runs out, could we end up in a long-distance relationship across countries? That would be absurd.”

You started by looking up a professional exam. Five minutes later, you are contemplating time zones, flights and residence permits. The story has changed genres without warning.

The comic twist is the calendar collision, not the candidate's effort. The person doing the training is managing work, language, exams and an uncertain future in Japan. That deserves respect.

6. Three things to discuss, without turning a first date into a legal hearing

First, the actual status and expiration date. Second, whether the 2027 exam has been applied for and what work-status options exist afterward. Third, the person's own wishes: to stay in Japan, return home or consider long-distance if circumstances change.

Dating does not itself grant residence rights, and a future marriage should never be assumed to be an automatic immigration solution. Nor should nationality be used to guess someone's plans.

Ending: Your feelings do not expire on a government schedule

There may be a successful exam, an approved change of status, or a period of living apart. The administrative deadline is real; the relationship's outcome belongs to the two people involved. Few romantic plots begin at the examination registration desk, yet here we are.
