Someone told acquaintances there were goats at Yotsuya Station in central Tokyo. The answer was essentially, “No way.” Yet there were two goats, Nagi and Pokke, and they were not trespassing. They had a task. The comedy begins when a perfectly factual report sounds like an urban legend.
What did JR East actually confirm?
JR East's October 19, 2026 announcement describes a trial in which two goats remove weeds by eating them. A Japanese television report from October 21 identifies one-year-old male Nagi and two-year-old female Pokke. The initiative began October 9 on a station employee's suggestion, reportedly the first such trial inside the Yamanote Line loop. Calling them “employees” is a joke, not evidence of a salary or a formal contract. For these workers, eating lunch and doing the job are remarkably similar.
The real reaction: a witness who wasn't believed
Rakugo performer Nanraku Katsura posted on October 19 that acquaintances did not believe the goat sighting. The message and date are preserved in a public record from October 20. The original X page could not be opened directly in this check; this is an archived post, not an invented quotation or a claim to have read its entire comment thread.
A October 21 roundup also recorded surprise that weeds existed in such an urban place and delight from people hoping to see the goats on their commute. The first question wasn't whether the project was efficient. It was whether the animals were really there.
Did the goats become official mascots?
Know Your Meme added “Nagi and Pokke” on October 23, documenting English-language discussion. A social post described the animals as official railway mascots. But JR East officially announced a weed-removal trial, not a mascot appointment. The encyclopedia entry was still under review; its existence alone does not establish worldwide popularity.
Original comedy: the information desk
Passenger: “I saw goats at the station.” Clerk: “Are you reporting lost property?” Passenger: “No, they were working.” Clerk: “Which department?” Passenger: “Grass maintenance.” Clerk: “And when do they take lunch?”
This scene is fictional, not a real station conversation.
The ending is written in grass
An October 20 FNN report even described Nagi dozing in a shelter. The trial is planned until December but may end sooner once the grass is gone. In office language: “Your job is to eat; once you've eaten everything, the project ends.” The witness told the truth. Reality simply wrote the better joke.
