Someone asks for your thoughts on DC’s Lanterns. Fair enough. Then you look at the photo and find SpongeBob and Patrick strolling down the street. The question is serious; the casting department has apparently lost its mind.

The meme starts with a promotional picture of Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler walking together as John Stewart and Hal Jordan. On September 4, 2026, an X post asked, “Thoughts on Lanterns 2026?” alongside the image. Four days later, another post added conspicuously rough clothing edits. The recognizable setup made an excellent blank canvas.

Soon the two men were being recast as the Cuphead leads, SpongeBob and Patrick, and Walter and Jesse from Breaking Bad. Sometimes the caption changes to name the imaginary replacement show. The more confidently the picture presents its completely wrong stars, the better.

The joke isn't that the original show is bad. It's that the familiar “thoughts on this upcoming series?” post keeps its straight face while reality changes underneath it. The marketing photo has become a two-person costume party, and nobody told the interviewer.

Dates and examples above are reported by Know Your Meme; the underlying X posts were not independently accessed here. The absolute first creator is not established.
