A Java snapshot player lost a house and chests after a crash. Find out what an older backup can restore and what remains unconfirmed.
You load your Minecraft world again. Your inventory is intact. You're standing where you left off. Your house, however, has vanished. Even the unfinished farm and chests are gone. That's an impressively unwanted renovation.
A player described exactly this on October 1, 2026, after a crash in a Java Edition snapshot. Crucially, they said they had backups.
The answer: a usable backup made before the damage may restore the missing builds, but only to that backup's point in time. Anything built afterward may need doing again.
First, copy both the current world folder and every backup archive somewhere safe. Minecraft's official help explains that Java Edition backups are dated ZIP files. You can find them through Edit World → Open Backups Folder. Try a restore using a separate copy rather than overwriting the only version you have.
Mojang warns that snapshots are experimental and may corrupt worlds. Its advice is to back up your world or test snapshots in a separate directory. That warning does not identify the cause of this specific incident. The Reddit post is a player's account, not proof of a widespread house-deleting bug.
Bottom line: check your backup's date before rebuilding. Your house might still exist, just in a ZIP file instead of on the map.
