Description: Worried that Stardew Valley 1.7 will ruin a modded farm? Here's what the developer has confirmed, why players are concerned, and a practical way to update without gambling with your save.

Short answer: As of October 23, 2026, Stardew Valley 1.7 has no announced release date, so no one can certify that every existing mod will work with it. A major update may require changes to SMAPI and individual mods; that is different from every save being destroyed. Copy your saves and Mods folder, check the mods you actually depend on, and test a duplicate farm before opening your main one.[1][3]

The October worry is real; a 1.7 disaster has not happened

On October 15, a player in r/StardewValleyMods described feeling stressed that the upcoming update might break their modded setup. Replies suggested holding off on updating, keeping an older version where possible, or playing the new content on another platform. Those are individual players discussing precautions, not reports that version 1.7 has already damaged their games.[2]

ConcernedApe's September 2, 2025 development note describes a small team working on 1.7 while he focuses much of his time on Haunted Chocolatier. He deliberately avoids a release-date commitment. He even notes that his own deeper involvement in 1.7 might happen after the other game releases, without promising that order. There is time to prepare rather than treating speculation as an imminent deadline.[1]

Three different things can go wrong

First, the mod loader may need an update. Second, an individual mod or one of its dependencies may be incompatible. Third, a mod that adds characters, places or objects may have left information in your save. These are separate failure modes. A mod failing to load does not automatically mean the underlying save is gone; saving a heavily modified farm with missing content can nevertheless create problems.[3]

The Stardew Valley Wiki explains that SMAPI can disable many incompatible mods and creates daily save backups. That is useful protection, not a promise that every custom setup can be restored perfectly. An independent copy made before upgrading gives you a safer starting point.[3]

A sensible update checklist

  1. Quit the game. Copy your saves and the entire Mods folder somewhere outside the game installation. Record which mods and versions you use.
  2. Check whether your storefront offers a way to defer updates. Version rollback options vary by platform; don't assume they are available everywhere.
  3. When 1.7 actually arrives, check SMAPI, required framework mods and any mods adding NPCs, maps or items.
  4. Try the new setup on a duplicate save. Test loading, travelling, and saving before trusting your original farm.

One extra trap: SMAPI's public compatibility list warns that its comprehensive monthly maintenance has lapsed. Use it as one clue, alongside the mod author's release notes and support pages, rather than as a universal green light.[4]

Verdict: back up the farm before you plant the next season

The update is something to look forward to, not a reason to abandon a beloved playthrough. Keep one untouched copy, let your essential mods catch up, and then enjoy 1.7 on your terms. You cannot insure your parsnips, but you can insure the save containing them.
