Description: Sister Act 3 was announced for Disney+ years ago, and Whoopi Goldberg discussed a completed script in 2025. Her September 2026 interview explains why fans are still waiting—and what would count as real progress.

Sister Act 3 has not been formally canceled as of October 28, 2026, but it still has no announced filming date or release date. In a September interview, Whoopi Goldberg said she was frustrated by the wait and remained cautiously hopeful. That is a development update, not a premiere announcement.

A Disney+ announcement is not a shooting schedule

At Disney's December 2020 investor presentation, the company announced a third Sister Act film with Goldberg returning as Deloris Van Cartier and producing alongside Tyler Perry. Disney+ was the intended destination. That gave the project an official starting point, but no guaranteed date for cameras to roll.

In March 2025, Goldberg was reported to have said the script was finished. A year and a half later, the distinction between a screenplay and a green light still matters. PEOPLE published an interview on September 15, 2026, conducted on September 8, in which Goldberg described roughly seven or eight years of trying to move the film forward. She wanted it to happen soon and said she was ready to play Deloris again.

Why the delay feels different from an ordinary sequel wait

The first film, released in 1992, turned a witness-protection disguise into a choir revolution: lounge singer Deloris brought new energy to a convent. The 1993 sequel shifted that energy into a school music program. The appeal is the unlikely group learning to sing together, not simply the number three after a familiar title.

Time has changed the possible reunion. Maggie Smith, who played the Reverend Mother, died in September 2024. Goldberg told PEOPLE that Smith had once verbally agreed to return and was waiting for a finished script before an earlier version stalled. In a March 2025 Reddit discussion, individual commenters worried that a sequel without Smith would feel different; others said the project had already taken too long. These are documented reactions, not evidence that all viewers agree.

Was Disney the reason the movie stalled?

Goldberg said revisions had bogged down an earlier attempt. She also suggested that other Disney legacy sequels had been moving ahead while Sister Act 3 sat further back in the queue. Those are her observations, not a published studio explanation of a cancellation.

A completed screenplay, an interested star and an earlier streaming plan are three separate milestones. What would change the answer now? A confirmed production start, a new cast announcement and an updated release or distribution plan. The Disney+ destination announced in 2020 should not be mistaken for a current release calendar.

The answer for fans

Goldberg's September 2026 message was essentially that she still wants to put on the habit. Sister Act 3 remains a project with a willing lead, but no verified path to a release date yet. Deloris once taught a scattered choir to find its rhythm. This time the production itself needs to find the downbeat.
