The 24 October 2026 cold open turned a real Gogglebox appearance, 72-hour emergency advice and the prime minister's own cupboard inventory into a time-travel…

The beans were a real news callback, not a random prop. Saturday Night Live UK opened at 10pm UK time on 24 October with Prime Minister Andy Burnham watching television beside Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram. Then another Burnham appeared from the future to warn of a cyberattack. His grand solution was to persuade everyone to buy an extra tin of beans. A national emergency became a supermarket errand.

The real Gogglebox appearance came first

At 9.05pm on Friday 23 October, Channel 4 aired a Stand Up To Cancer charity edition of Celebrity Gogglebox. The British format puts people on a sofa to watch and discuss television. Burnham and Rotheram genuinely appeared together at Downing Street, with beer and assorted snacks. That was a real charity programme; SNL parodied it the following night.

George Fouracres played Burnham in the sketch and Emma Sidi played Rotheram. Their fictional PM proudly offered the crisps a supposedly ordinary, relatable bloke would have. Trying far too hard to appear normal is the first joke.

Where the beans and cyberattack came from

On 23 October, the UK government promoted its Be Ready guidance, encouraging households to keep at least three days of drinking water and non-perishable food for disruptions caused by severe weather, infrastructure problems or cyber incidents. This was general preparation advice, not a prediction of a particular attack.

On BBC Radio 5 Live that same day, Burnham said his own cupboards held beans, soup and Twiglets, a distinctive British savoury snack. The writers inflated an ordinary kitchen inventory into a mission of national importance.

The future newspaper reveals the punchline

Paddy Young played future Burnham. After present-day Burnham promised to tell the country to buy beans, a newspaper from the future changed to a headline about the nation eating beans during a cyberattack. The attack had not vanished: people merely had something to eat. The grand time-travel intervention produced a remarkably modest result.

The sofa also provided a framing device for parodies of The Celebrity Traitors, The Great British Bake Off and Prince William's real appearance on The Graham Norton Show. Sidi's Rotheram wished SNL UK would impersonate him, although viewers were already watching that impersonation. Future Burnham later praised it. The sketch was making a joke about its own existence.

Did audiences respond?

The official clip was posted on 24 October. When checked on 26 October, a relevant Reddit thread among British SNL fans had more than 100 upvotes; comments enjoyed the two Burnham performances and the quick turnaround on topical stories. That establishes activity in one fan community, not a worldwide viral total. Scene details were cross-checked against the official posting and contemporary reports; this account does not claim direct viewing of the entire video.

The point is the mismatch in scale. A visitor from the future arrives as if to prevent catastrophe, but his vital message is simply to add one tin to the shopping basket. The real prime minister supplied the beans; SNL UK supplied the time machine.
