Description: Xbox named Maria Angelidou-Smith to lead Mojang from October 19, 2026. The announcement changes the leadership, not the rules for Java Edition, mods or purchases. Here's what sparked the worry and what would count as a real change.

Mojang is getting a new chief executive, but Xbox has not announced a new paywall for Minecraft Java Edition. On October 8, 2026, the company named Maria Angelidou-Smith as the incoming CEO of Mojang and Minecraft, with a start date of October 19. That's a leadership decision; players weren't given a new price list.

Why does her background raise eyebrows?

Angelidou-Smith previously worked on products including monetization and Facebook Groups at Meta, then held a senior product role at Reddit. Xbox specifically praised her understanding of creators, large communities, technology and monetization. If you play Java for community-made mods and servers, it's easy to hear that last word a little louder than the others.

But professional experience isn't a feature roadmap. Xbox says her initial priority is listening to Mojang's teams and communities. The October statement specifies no price increase, paid Java features, mod licensing change or switch to the Bedrock Marketplace model.

The Java anxiety predates this appointment

In a July 6 Reddit thread about Mojang reporting directly to Xbox leadership, commenters worried about Java Edition's future. Others pushed back, noting the strength of Java's modding scene or hoping for more investment. That discussion was three months before the new CEO announcement: it's evidence of an existing concern, not a reaction we can retroactively attribute to her hiring.

The concern isn't really about one executive's résumé. For many Java players, the appeal is the freedom to install community mods, build servers and keep tinkering. Losing that flexibility would feel like discovering someone installed a checkout counter in your blocky backyard.

What would actually settle the question?

Look for official, dated changes to Java Edition's terms, updates and community tools, and distinguish them from Bedrock Marketplace announcements. As of October 14, the verified October news is the incoming CEO and the new XP division for Xbox projects beyond games. Until a policy or product announcement arrives, the pickaxe still comes without a surprise toll booth.
