Description: Players claimed Mafia III for free in October 2026, then some reported losing access. Here's what changed, what remains uncertain, and how to check your own account.
Some players who claimed Mafia III for free on October 6 later reported that it had vanished from their PlayStation libraries. The surprise £0 listing appeared in the UK and other regions before the store was corrected. Reports of missing copies are real; a blanket decision about every claim is a different question.
From “claimed it!” to “where did it go?”
On October 6, the PS4 version of Mafia III appeared as a free claim in several PlayStation Store territories. Reddit users celebrated adding it to their libraries. Even someone with a formidable backlog can appreciate the appeal of a free game.
By October 7, that window had closed. Push Square reported hearing from players whose newly claimed copies had disappeared. One commenter said their full game had turned into access to a demo; another still saw the game marked as owned. That inconsistency is exactly what made the situation unsettling.
People weren't merely chasing a bargain. They had pressed the button, seen the game added to their account, and assumed they could play it later. The question is whether a successful free claim survives a storefront correction.
Check the account, not just the price tag
A price returning to normal doesn't by itself tell you what license is attached to your account. Nor are a paid purchase, an old PlayStation Plus entitlement, and this brief free listing interchangeable.
Look at the game library, transaction history, and edition on the same account that made the claim. If a game is locked or missing, Sony's official troubleshooting step is Restore Licenses: on PS5, Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses; on PS4, Settings → Account Management → Restore Licenses. This may repair a console's recognition of a license. It cannot guarantee the return of an entitlement that was withdrawn server-side.
What happens to the free copies?
As of October 14, no single public Sony statement found in the checked sources settles the fate of every October 6 claim. Keep a record of any transaction and contact PlayStation Support if the account shows a claim but access is still blocked.
The useful distinction is simple: what the store displays, what your account records, and what you can actually launch may tell different stories. Start with your own records rather than someone else's certainty about what Sony “must” do next.
