Description: Katana ZERO's long-awaited expansion is now described as sequel-sized. Here's what the developers actually promised about its price, what changed in October 2026, and why fans are asking whether the DLC will still be free.

The latest explicit official pricing commitment we can verify is still free DLC for owners of Katana ZERO. In April 2025, the developer and publisher reiterated that promise. On October 22, 2026, lead developer Justin Stander described the expansion as the size of a full sequel, with more than 30 new songs, but did not announce a price change. There is still no confirmed release date as of October 28, 2026. [1][2]

How did a free expansion become sequel-sized?

Released in 2019, Katana ZERO is a side-scrolling action game where Zero cuts through rooms, learns enemy patterns, and repeatedly tries again after a lethal mistake. The fast combat is only half its appeal. The fractured memories, uneasy conversations, and unfinished threads of the story leave players wanting to know what happens next.

The April 10, 2025 update promised new characters, levels, gameplay, and story. At that point, the expansion was already approaching the size of the original game, and its creators said the pieces were coming together. They could not give a release date. Stander's October 22, 2026 message then raised the scale again: work continued, the project was now described as the size of a full sequel, and its soundtrack included more than 30 new tracks. [1][2]

That is a statement about scope, not a checkout-page announcement. A sequel-sized DLC does not automatically become a separately sold sequel. Likewise, 30 songs tell us something about the music budget and variety, not how many hours a playthrough will last.

Why are players asking to pay for something promised free?

A post in r/KatanaZero on October 27 asked whether the DLC was still going to be free. Replies split between expecting the old promise to stand and saying they would gladly pay for a project that has consumed so many years. Those are identifiable player reactions, not a new statement from the publisher. [3]

The tension is unusual. Most game communities campaign for more content at no extra charge. Here, some players are effectively asking the creator to put a price tag on the gift. They want the story, but they also recognize the work behind it. Neither affection nor the expansion's size changes the official price by itself.

Does the bigger DLC mean the story will finally end?

The published descriptions confirm additional story material, characters, and action. They do not establish that every unresolved plot thread will be tied up in this release. The October update also did not set a 2026 or 2027 launch window. A release-year guess circulating among fans remains a guess until the developer or publisher dates the game. [1][2]

The useful signals to watch are a fresh statement about price and eligible platforms, followed by a firm release date. Development updates can be encouraging without functioning as a countdown.

Verdict: a giant expansion, and the original price promise

Free remains the last clearly stated official plan; sequel-sized is the newly confirmed scale. Until the people releasing it say otherwise, there is no reason to treat a paid conversion as decided. In a game built around rewinding time, the power fans really need may be fast-forwarding to release day.
