Description: Blighted has slipped from fall 2026 into 2027. Here is why players feared cancellation, what Drinkbox actually said, and which promised update is worth watching.

Blighted is still in development, with its release now targeted for 2027. Drinkbox Studios said it needed additional time to tune and polish the game. The developer also promised one more update before the end of 2026, followed by further news in 2027. No specific launch date accompanied that announcement.[2]

Why did the delay feel like a cancellation scare?

Drinkbox, the Canadian team behind Guacamelee! and Nobody Saves the World, introduced Blighted on December 15, 2025. The psychedelic western action RPG was previously expected in fall 2026. A move into the next calendar year naturally changes what people expect from their wishlists.[1][2]

The concern was not invented for a headline. In a September 21 Reddit discussion, one commenter said they had been worried the quiet news cycle meant the project—or even the studio—was in trouble, and were relieved to hear it had not been canceled. Others were disappointed but thought the crowded 2026 release calendar made the delay easier to accept. Those are individual responses, not a poll of the entire audience.[3]

What is Drinkbox actually building?

Developer Josh Davis described the extra time as necessary for polishing and tuning. The accompanying development update discussed level structure and showed Watcher's Peak, a hub area. Drinkbox said another development update was planned before 2026 ends, with more information to come the following year.[2]

The design explains why polish matters here. The Blight system reacts to how well you fight: at higher levels it can alter enemies, your abilities, and the environment. Defeated bosses yield brains that restore lost memories and unlock abilities, while the adventure supports both solo play and drop-in co-op. These are announced features, not a guarantee that every part of the finished game will behave exactly as a preview suggests.[1]

What should players watch for now?

As of October 20, 2026, 2027 is the release window for PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. A precise day and platform-by-platform timing remain to be announced.[2] The next useful signal is the promised year-end development update: tangible footage and level details tell us more than guesses about another delay.

In Blighted, eating a boss's brain restores memories. Players would probably settle for recovering one missing detail: the release date.
