Are Mental Leaps a Bug or a Superpower? — “Bungee-Gum Thinking”: Stretch Far, Verify, and Pull the Idea Back

1. Conclusion: mental leaps are powerful—if you can return from them

A conversation starts with children’s activity and suddenly jumps through handheld games, smartphones, dogs, childhood exploration, and a milkshake.

From the outside, it looks broken.

Yet the chain can sometimes be pulled back into a stronger idea: people once had to move through the world to obtain stimulation; modern systems can deliver stimulation directly to them.

The useful sequence is:

stretch → attach to a distant concept → verify the bridge → pull the idea back to the original problem.

This article calls that “Bungee-Gum Thinking.” It is an original metaphor, not an official psychological term. The official Japanese TV-anime glossary for HUNTER×HUNTER describes Hisoka’s Bungee Gum as aura with properties of both rubber and gum: it can stretch, contract, stick, and detach.[9]

Four verbs: stretch, stick, retract, detach.

2. Connecting distant concepts is a real topic in creativity research

Creativity research has a long tradition of studying remote association: finding useful relationships between concepts that are not normally close together.

The Remote Associates Test and related research have been used to study remote association, insight, divergence, and convergence.[1]

Research on semantic-memory networks also suggests that more creative people often show more flexible conceptual networks, with greater connectivity and shorter paths between concepts.[2]

So “Why are we suddenly talking about dogs?” is not automatically a failure.

The real test is not distance. It is whether a defensible bridge exists.

3. Divergence without convergence becomes chaos; convergence without divergence becomes boring

Divergent thinking expands the search space.

What else? Animals? Games? Childhood? The opposite case?

Evaluation and convergence reduce it.

Is the relationship real? Did we confuse correlation with causation? Is the analogy only funny, or actually explanatory?

Dual-process accounts of creativity often distinguish idea generation from idea evaluation, even though the two interact.[5]

Practical rule:

During generation, allow weird branches. During editing, be ruthless.

Do not run the brainstorming meeting and the quality-assurance meeting at the same time.

4. The brain also appears to coordinate spontaneous and controlled systems

Creative tasks repeatedly involve interactions between the default network, associated with internally generated thought and memory, and the executive control network, associated with goal maintenance, selection, and control.[3][4]

Reviews describe goal-directed memory retrieval, inhibition of obvious responses, and internally focused attention as important mechanisms.[3]

A 2025 neurofeedback study provided additional causal evidence: experimentally increasing default–executive coupling improved performance on creative-thinking tasks.[6]

This does not mean “default network = imagination department” and “executive network = manager.”

The broader pattern is that creativity is not freedom versus control. It is freedom coordinated with control.

5. The four moves of Bungee-Gum Thinking

1. Stretch

Permit one distant association.

2. Stick

Do not connect A directly to B. Name the intermediate concept.

Child ↔ dog is weak.
Child ↔ age-related activity patterns ↔ dog is testable.

Outdoor play ↔ smartphone is weak.
Outdoor play ↔ cost of obtaining stimulation ↔ smartphone is more precise.

3. Retract

Return to the original question.

What did this detour actually add?

4. Detach

If research contradicts the bridge, remove it.

Interesting does not mean true.

6. Why this pairs well with AI—and why AI can also build fake bridges

Humans produce strange jumps. AI can search terminology, retrieve research, generate counterexamples, and reorganize the chain.

A 2024 Nature Human Behaviour study found that ChatGPT assistance increased idea creativity across several tasks relative to no technology or conventional web search; the authors linked part of the benefit to combining remotely related concepts coherently.[7]

But AI has a dangerous complementary talent: it can make a nonexistent bridge sound elegant.

Recent large-scale human–LLM comparisons also show that creative performance depends on the metric and the distribution.[8]

So the final gate should not be “AI approved it.”

The final gate is evidence.

7. When a ridiculous chain becomes one coherent article

An anonymized example begins with:

“Why do children move so much?”

Then it jumps:

children → adolescence → handheld games → smartphones → dogs → childhood water exploration → adult walking → a milkshake.

On the surface: conversational damage.

After restructuring:

  1. Movement used to be embedded in the path to stimulation.
  2. Digital systems can reduce the physical cost of obtaining stimulation.
  3. Adults can deliberately put rewards back on the other side of movement.

The original question becomes a better one:

How much physical movement does an environment require before it delivers stimulation and reward?

That is a productive leap—not because every association was correct, but because the chain was tested, corrected, and pulled back into a stronger model.

8. Turn the talent into a workflow: Leap → Bridge → Falsify → Return

  1. Record the leap. Do not grade it immediately.
  2. Name the bridge. What exactly is shared—feedback, incentives, information flow, friction, time cost?
  3. Search for disconfirmation. What would make the idea wrong?
  4. Return. How did the detour improve the original question?

No answer? Cut the branch.

This converts random jumping into an exploratory search algorithm.

9. The main enemy is forced connection

Typical failures:

  • B followed A, therefore A caused B.
  • Dogs make the idea intuitive, therefore humans work the same way.
  • A joke is memorable, so it quietly becomes evidence.
  • The conclusion comes first and friendly sources are collected afterward.

The mature form of Bungee-Gum Thinking is not “connect everything.”

It is stretch far enough to discover something new, then cut the connection yourself if it does not survive inspection.

10. Summary: mental leaps are a strength when they remain retractable

Remote association is a central theme in creativity research.[1][2]

Creative cognition requires both idea expansion and evaluation.[3][5]

Brain-network studies repeatedly point to cooperation between systems supporting spontaneous internal thought and cognitive control.[3][4][6]

So there is no need to eliminate mental leaps.

Stretch. Stick. Retract. Detach.

The real danger is not going too far.

It is enjoying the destination so much that you forget the original question.

At that point, Bungee Gum has become a very expensive lost-child leash.
