Description: The cursed apple, the coffin confession and Niyyah's October 20, 2026 interview explain why Joe's apology upset her. Spoilers through episode six.

Niyyah was not mainly upset because Joe eliminated her. She was upset that her departure became a moment for reassuring the person who eliminated her. In an October 20 Entertainment Weekly interview, Niyyah Bilal Hayes said Joe Vanella was performing his assigned role as a Traitor.

What happened?

The American reality competition pits secret Traitors against Faithful contestants trying to identify them. “Murder” means elimination inside the game, not an actual crime. The October 15 NBC episode, “A Murder of Necessity,” appears on Peacock as season five, episode six of The Traitors.

A Traitor had to toss a cursed apple to a target. Catching it triggered elimination. Joe's first throw to Niyyah failed; the second worked. A casual-looking game of catch secretly ended her run. Later, at a staged cemetery, the remaining candidates waited in prop coffins. Joe, lying next to Niyyah, admitted that he was a Traitor and that his apple had eliminated her, then apologized.

Why did the apology make things worse?

Niyyah said she accepted that eliminating people was Joe's job. She needed time to process her own loss, however, and his repeated apologies seemed to ask her to comfort him instead. She recalled that Joe confessed about ten seconds after entering the coffin, certainly within a minute, although they stayed there longer. She said she responded with harsh words that were cut from the broadcast. That is her testimony about unseen footage, not an independently viewed scene.

Did Joe break a rule?

An October 18 Reddit discussion raised the question. TV Insider described the general rule against Traitors revealing their identities, then interpreted this case as different because Niyyah was already leaving and could not inform the others. That interpretation is not a confirmed production ruling about this particular scene. Niyyah said she could have shouted Joe's identity but chose not to spoil the game for other players.

Bottom line

The October 15 episode provided the spectacle; the October 20 interview clarified the emotional dispute. Niyyah accepted betrayal as part of the game but did not want to manage Joe's remorse during her own exit. They spoke after filming, and she accepted his apology. Even a prop coffin apparently comes with an unexpected extra job: comforting the person who put you there.
