Shrek 5 is currently scheduled to open in US theaters on June 30, 2027. That is the latest studio scheduling change documented in the sources reviewed as of October 17, 2026. Another postponement has not been established by those sources. After two changes, though, fans have a perfectly reasonable question: is this date finally going to stick?[1]

How did we get from 2026 to 2027?

The release calendar has had three stops: July 1, 2026, then December 23, 2026, and now June 30, 2027. Variety reported the latest shift in August 2025, attributing it to Universal and DreamWorks Animation. The studios did not provide a reason for that move.[1]

That missing explanation matters. A theory that the studio is reworking the animation is not the same thing as an announcement that it is doing so. The film's teaser sparked criticism of character designs, but connecting that reaction to the delay requires evidence we do not have. Otherwise, a scheduling update becomes an imaginary behind-the-scenes documentary.

What are fans actually saying?

In a September 21, 2025 discussion on r/Shrek, one commenter joked that every time someone asks for an update, the movie slips another six months. Another hoped the extra time would improve the animation. In January 2026, fans were still asking when they might see more footage or receive another meaningful update.[2][3]

Those comments capture two different anxieties: will the date move again, and will the wait pay off? They are examples of real discussion, not a poll of the entire fandom. They also cannot reveal what is happening inside the studio.

What is firmly in place?

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are returning as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Zendaya has joined the voice cast as their daughter, and Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are directing. The announced talent is concrete; theories about secret rewrites and a third delay are not.[1]

Bottom line: watch the calendar, then the trailer

June 30, 2027 remains the US theatrical target reported in the latest confirmed scheduling announcement reviewed here. Release dates can change, so the next reliable signals will be an updated studio calendar and new official footage. Dates for other countries should be checked separately. Far Far Away is already a long trip; fans would rather the release date did not become part of the journey.
