Description: Xbox announced Senua for 2027, then disclosed failed attempts to secure Ninja Theory's future. Here's what the official statements actually mean for the next Hellblade-universe game.

As of October 24, 2026, Xbox has not announced that Senua is cancelled. But its original 2027 release window now sits alongside a serious studio crisis. On September 22, Xbox said two proposed agreements involving Ninja Theory had fallen through and that it would consult employees on a proposed closure while exploring alternatives.[2]

Spoilers: This article avoids major story revelations from either Hellblade game.

What Xbox promised in June

The June 7 Xbox Wire interview introduced Senua as a follow-up to the first two Hellblade games, deliberately titled without a Roman numeral. Studio head Dom Matthews described a larger action-adventure with tactical combat, freer traversal and interconnected places to explore. The story would follow Senua after Hellblade II, with a setting shaped by her vision of purgatory.[1]

At that point, Matthews said the studio's 85 creatives were focused on Senua; the experimental Project Mara had been dropped to concentrate resources. Xbox's announcement named 2027 and listed Xbox Series X|S, PC, Steam and PlayStation 5.[1] Those details establish what was planned in June, not how much work has survived the autumn restructuring.

Why fans are worried now

The September 22 statement is unusually specific: two agreements fell through, and a proposed closure entered employee consultation.[2] That is more substantial than a vague rumor, but a proposal is not a completed closure. October reports of staff redundancies added to the concern.

In an October 5 Reddit discussion, users questioned how a game could receive a showcase trailer while its studio faced closure. Others expressed sympathy for the team and hoped the studio would survive.[3] These are observable individual reactions, not evidence that every Hellblade player feels the same.

Three updates worth watching

The most useful questions are whether the development team can continue, whether another organization might take over the project, and whether Xbox revises the 2027 release plan. A surviving store listing or old trailer answers none of those questions by itself. Equally, layoffs alone do not establish that the game has been cancelled.

There is an awkward irony here: Senua was unveiled as a more playable, more expansive evolution of Hellblade, only for players to start asking whether they will get to play it at all. The June interview explains the creative ambition; the September statement explains the production risk.

Verdict

Senua remains an announced 2027 game without an official cancellation notice as of October 24. Treat that date as a plan under pressure, and watch for a project-specific announcement after the consultation process. The protagonist is searching for a way through purgatory; her creators now need a path forward of their own.
