Description: Is the second Simpsons movie meant to end the television show? Here's how the September 2027 release, Fox's Season 40 renewal and actual fan hopes fit together.

The New Simpsons Movie has not been announced as the finale of The Simpsons. Fox has already renewed the TV show through Season 40, extending its planned run beyond the film's 2027 theatrical release. Fans can still hope for a grand farewell on the big screen, but that hope is different from a studio announcement.

September 2027, not the original July date

20th Century Studios revealed a second film on September 29, 2025, initially targeting July 23, 2027. On December 5 it moved the US release to September 3, 2027, the Labor Day weekend. Disney's August 16, 2026 D23 recap subsequently described the movie as a September 2027 US release. The same announcement lists a 2027 release in Japan without fixing the Japanese opening day.

The first theatrical adventure, released in 2007, gave Homer a mistake big enough to endanger all of Springfield. A sequel roughly twenty years later is a major event even without being a farewell. Disney has not supplied a detailed plot or promised an ending that permanently changes the family's television lives.

Where the finale theory comes from

In a September 30, 2025 discussion on r/Simpsons, one commenter wished the movie would close the series; another wanted a proper send-off that would be difficult to squeeze into a standard 22-minute episode. Other replies immediately pointed to the renewal through Season 40. These are identifiable, differing opinions in one discussion, not a survey of the audience.

There is an appealing creative argument behind the wish. Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie have spent decades resetting to the same family arrangement after each crisis. A film could make room for an unusually consequential choice, a bigger Springfield ensemble or a celebration of the show's history. None of those possibilities establishes that the writers intend to finish the entire franchise.

What happens to the show after the movie?

The four-season renewal takes the television run through Season 40, associated with the 2028–29 broadcast season. That makes continued episodes after the September 2027 film the current plan. The renewal does not guarantee infinite seasons, and a movie can offer emotional closure without serving as the last installment.

The real clues to watch are future story announcements: whether the film stands alone, how much it uses the town's familiar supporting cast and whether the creators describe any lasting consequences. A teaser poster and a release date cannot answer those questions.

Bottom line: The movie is a theatrical return, not a confirmed goodbye. Most families leave the cinema and go home. The Simpsons might leave the cinema and go right back to their couch—an ending that, for this particular family, sounds perfectly on brand.
