Description: The January 2026 staff interview explains why Season 2 closed differently from the manga—and what a third season would actually require.

As of October 27, 2026, My Dress-Up Darling Season 3 has not been officially announced. The anime's distinct Season 2 ending was designed to give those episodes a satisfying stopping point, not to announce that Marin and Gojo's entire story was over. Production desk staff member Shota Umehara said in a January 29 interview that further production was a blank slate, although he would like to return if circumstances allowed.[1]

Why didn't Season 2 simply set up the next manga arc?

Season 2 aired episodes 13 through 24 between July and September 2025. In a detailed Japanese interview, the staff explained that its final episode had been difficult to settle. They could not promise another season, so leaving viewers with nothing but a teaser would have been an awkward bargain. They wanted this particular twelve-episode run to end on Marin Kitagawa and Wakana Gojo themselves.[1]

Original manga creator Shinichi Fukuda joined a discussion and even drafted an ending proposal. That does not mean the broadcast finale reproduced her proposal verbatim. Director Keisuke Shinohara considered several possibilities before choosing the finished version. An anime-original stopping point is evidence of an editorial choice, not proof of cancellation.[1]

What does “blank slate” mean for Season 3?

Umehara's message had two halves: no concrete production plan at the time, and a desire to make more if the pieces came together. He also emphasized that he did not want to make a careless anime.[1] A staff member's enthusiasm is meaningful, but it is not a studio greenlight, release window, or promise of the same team returning.

That quality concern is unusually tangible here. For Season 2, the staff managed roughly 200 costume designs, investigated how real garments fit, and recreated details such as the construction of a suit. The show is about a boy who takes costume-making seriously; if the animation suddenly treated clothes as interchangeable decorations, the romance would lose part of its foundation.[1]

Are fans asking for a third season or a film?

Both ideas appear in actual discussions. On July 31, 2026, a new viewer who had bought the manga asked how to support a possible final season. On August 15, another thread asked whether Season 3 would ever happen; replies floated a movie as a possible way to adapt the remaining material.[2][3] Those are identifiable fan hopes and guesses, not insider reports.

Fans also discussed the English release of the manga's fifteenth and final volume in April 2026.[4] The existence of a completed source story makes adaptation conceivable, but it cannot determine whether the continuation would be a television season, film, or something else.

The answer

Season 3 remains unannounced, while a key staff member has publicly expressed interest in making it. The original ending of Season 2 was a full stop for that production, not necessarily for the franchise. It is a rather fitting dilemma for a show about painstaking cosplay: the team would rather leave a seam neatly finished than display an unfinished outfit as if it were ready for the convention.
