Sorting the corridor incident, the NTR-like affair, the “serial hookup” myth, and the bizarre fact that she and Rudeus are almost the same age in lived time
Major spoilers for the web novel through the Labyrinth and Shirone arcs. Sexual events are discussed only in non-graphic terms.
0. Five-second answer: Roxy is not a serial hookup character. She is usually sensible, but her rare disasters are enormous
It is easy to remember Roxy as one of the more normal people in Mushoku Tensei. She is diligent, serious about teaching, and one of the first people to change Rudeus’s life for the better.
Then you put the relevant web-novel scenes next to each other.
Early in the story, she watches her employers through their bedroom door from the hallway while pleasuring herself.[1]
Much later, after learning that her former student Rudeus is married and that his wife is close to giving birth, she sleeps with him while he is devastated by his father’s death. The next day, she herself describes her action as taking advantage of him while he was weak.[2][3]
Yet the same text makes clear that Rudeus was her first sexual partner. Her claim to be “experienced” was a bluff.[2][3]
So the accurate picture is not “Roxy casually picks up men.”
It is closer to this:
She spends almost fifty years being remarkably restrained, then the first major romantic incident she gets into arrives with every possible complication attached.
1. The Roxy “what were you thinking?” tier list
This is a comedy ranking of incidents, not a score of her worth as a person.
| Tier | Incident | Why it hits so hard |
|---|---|---|
| SSS | The post-labyrinth affair with her married former student | Pregnant wife, severe grief, former teacher-student relationship, no prior consent from the wife |
| SS | Watching Paul and Zenith from the hallway while pleasuring herself | Privacy violation plus astonishing location choice |
| S | The sigh that stayed with Pax for years | A serious failure as a teacher |
| A | Claiming to be experienced when she was not | A desperate bluff that becomes strangely sad and funny |
| B | Passing strong fear of the Superd tribe to Rudeus | More inherited social prejudice than uniquely Roxy’s cruelty |
| Not guilty | Private masturbation, consensual intimacy after marriage | Those acts are not the problem |
| Not guilty by itself | The numerical age gap | Long-lived races and reincarnation make one number insufficient |
The important point is that these are different kinds of failure.
The hallway incident is bizarre behavior.
The labyrinth incident is an ethical and relationship problem.
The Pax incident is a teaching failure.
Roxy is not “one kind of bad.” She has several completely different incident reports.
2. SS tier: the hallway incident is real
In chapter 4, young Rudeus comes into the hallway at night and finds Roxy by Paul and Zenith’s bedroom door.
The narration makes the situation unmistakable: she is flushed, breathing differently, staring through the gap, and moving a hand under her robe.[1]
This is not a later fandom invention.
It happens in the original web novel.
If she were alone in her own room, there would be nothing remarkable to discuss. The issue is the chain of decisions:
her employers’ house
→ their bedroom
→ peeping through the door
→ the hallway
→ doing it right there.
At that point it stops being “Roxy is a sexual adult” and becomes “why is the responsible magic tutor operating as a corridor cryptid?”
That contrast is the joke.
By day: competent teacher.
By night: unexplained hallway phenomenon.
3. SSS tier: after the labyrinth, good intentions and bad boundaries occupy the same scene
After the labyrinth expedition, Rudeus loses Paul. Zenith is rescued but is no longer as she was. Rudeus collapses into grief and barely functions.
At first, Roxy does not know he is married. She had been attracted to the grown Rudeus after he rescued her in the labyrinth and had approached him assuming he was available.[2][3]
Then she learns the full situation: he is married, and his wife will soon have a child.[2]
She still chooses to comfort him physically. Her wish to help him and her own feelings for him are both present.
It would also be inaccurate to describe the scene as a one-sided assault. Rudeus actively pulls her closer and ultimately acts himself.[2]
But the power of the scene comes from the context. Roxy later says, in effect, that she took advantage of him while he was emotionally weak. She also tries to step back afterward and tells him to return to his wife and treat her well.[3]
So all of these statements can be true at once:
She genuinely wanted to save him.
She genuinely loved him.
She knew he was married.
She had personal desire.
He was in an unusually vulnerable state.
That mixture is much more interesting than reducing her to either “saint” or “homewrecker.”
4. Is it NTR? At the moment of the act, it is adultery; the story later lands on plural marriage
“NTR” is fan vocabulary, not an official genre label for this event, so perspective matters.
From Sylphie’s position at the time, her husband has sex with another woman while she is waiting at home and pregnant. There was no advance agreement. Rudeus himself calls what he did cheating.[3]
In that broad sense, the NTR-like reading is understandable.
But it is not a standard “steal the husband and destroy the marriage” plot.
Roxy tries to withdraw after the trip. When Rudeus proposes marriage, she asks whether he should obtain his wife’s approval first.[3][4]
Once they return home, Rudeus announces that he wants Roxy as his second wife. Norn reacts with the anger many readers would expect. Sylphie, however, hears the circumstances and eventually accepts Roxy.[5]
The timeline is therefore:
cheating happens
→ they return home
→ family meeting from hell
→ the first wife gives post-event acceptance
→ the relationship becomes a plural marriage
It is almost as if an NTR-like incident is absorbed by an emergency household constitutional amendment.
5. Is Roxy a “serial hookup” woman? No. The text says almost the opposite
Roxy tells Rudeus she is experienced when she is trying to comfort him after the labyrinth.
The next morning, the narration explicitly reveals that this was false.[2]
Rudeus later reflects that he had been her first partner.[3]
So the image of Roxy constantly picking up men is simply not supported by the web novel.
She is almost fifty, and Rudeus is her first sexual partner.
That makes the surrounding circumstances even stranger:
former student;
married;
wife about to give birth;
father just died;
Roxy herself inexperienced.
For someone who waited that long, the first draw from the romance gacha had an absurd number of modifiers.
The web novel also does not support the idea that she had been sexually targeting Rudeus since childhood. Roxy herself says her romantic turning point was being rescued by the grown Rudeus in the labyrinth.[3]
6. The age paradox: Roxy is fifty, while Rudeus has also lived roughly fifty years if you include his previous life
During the family confrontation, Roxy says that she will turn fifty that year.[5]
Rudeus is sixteen around the labyrinth arc. The official web-novel synopsis states that he died at age thirty-four in his previous life before reincarnating.[6][2]
If we are counting accumulated years lived with memory:
34 years before reincarnation
- 16 years after reincarnation
≈ 50 years.
This is not merely a fan arithmetic trick. The official MF Books character page explicitly says that Roxy’s age is close to Rudeus’s when his previous life is included.[7]
That gives the relationship three different “ages.”
1. Physical and social age
Rudeus is sixteen; Roxy is around fifty.
2. Accumulated lived time
Rudeus carries memories from roughly fifty years of existence.
3. The age Roxy believes he has
Roxy does not know about the thirty-four years before reincarnation.
From her perspective, this is the boy she once taught at age three, now grown to sixteen.
Readers alone can look down from the ceiling and say:
“You two have lived almost the same number of years.”
That is the bizarre asymmetry.
Still, it would be too simple to declare “34 + 16 = mental age 50.” Rudeus has gone through childhood again in a different body, family and world, and his personality develops in the new life.
“About fifty years of accumulated life” is more accurate than “a literal fifty-year-old mind.”
7. The teaching failure that hurts more than the sexual jokes: Pax
If we only talk about Roxy’s sexual oddities, we miss a much more serious part of her characterization.
Years after she taught Prince Pax, he confronts her with a memory. He had worked hard and finally learned intermediate magic. When he proudly showed her, what stayed with him was her sigh—something he interpreted as “is that all?”[8]
Roxy had taught the exceptionally gifted Rudeus first. The danger is obvious: once a teacher’s internal standard has been calibrated by a prodigy, an ordinary student can look slow even while making real progress.
It is the nightmare version of a very ordinary teaching mistake.
Your first student is SSR rarity, so you accidentally grade the next child by SSR standards.
Pax’s later actions and fate are not simply “Roxy’s fault.” His life contains many other causes.
But Roxy herself later takes the failure seriously. She cries over not realizing how her attitude affected him and even asks whether she has the right to continue teaching.[9]
That gives us three different Roxy failures:
hallway: bizarre boundary violation;
labyrinth: romantic and marital ethics;
Pax: educational responsibility.
They should not be collapsed into one joke.
8. Things that do not need to be added to Roxy’s criminal record
Private masturbation
Nothing wrong with it. The hallway incident is about spying and location, not the existence of sexual desire.
Consensual intimacy after the household agreement
Once Sylphie has accepted the arrangement and the family has discussed how to live together, that is a different situation from the original cheating.[5]
“She faked a pregnancy to get into the family”
No. Roxy later corrects the misunderstanding and says she is not pregnant. The pregnancy angle had been pushed by someone else; it was not Roxy lying about being pregnant.[5]
“She groomed him from childhood”
The web-novel account points the other way: Roxy identifies the labyrinth rescue by grown Rudeus as the moment of love at first sight.[3]
“The age gap alone settles the entire issue”
Not in a setting with long-lived species and a reincarnated protagonist. But the opposite shortcut—“he has fifty years of memories, therefore everything is automatically fine”—also ignores the fact that Roxy does not know the reincarnation history.
The oddness survives precisely because several age frameworks are true at the same time.
9. Final verdict: low incident frequency, catastrophic incident severity
Roxy is easy to remember as “not that bad” because most of the time she genuinely is not.
She studies hard.
She takes teaching seriously.
She helps people.
She reflects on mistakes.
The story repeatedly treats her as someone who saved Rudeus in important ways.
That strong “reliable master” folder in the reader’s head can quietly bury the fact that she once sat outside her employers’ bedroom doing something she absolutely should not have been doing there.
Then the labyrinth arc adds a second major file:
nearly fifty years old; first partner; former pupil; already married; wife near childbirth; father just died.
And readers possess one piece of information Roxy does not:
Roxy: roughly fifty years lived.
Rudeus: 34 previous + 16 current ≈ fifty years lived.
So the strangest summary is not “old woman and teenage boy,” nor is it “two normal fifty-year-olds.”
It is:
Two people with almost the same accumulated amount of life, while only one of them knows that fact.
Roxy is not a serial eater.
She went a very long time without eating.
She simply chose, for her first plate, the one with every complication on the menu.
