Description: Kakashi's late arrivals in Naruto connect to the memorial for Obito. The once strict child inherits his friend's values—then finds his supposedly dead friend alive and on the other side.
Major spoilers for Naruto, including its ending.
Kakashi Hatake's lateness is more than a running joke. He often spends time at the memorial stone bearing the name of Obito Uchiha, his teammate whom he believed dead. Official Naruto retrospectives confirm that Obito was presumed killed and that his name was placed on the memorial.[1][2]
Why Kakashi visits the memorial
As children, Obito was crushed by falling rock while protecting Kakashi. He left Kakashi his Sharingan and asked him to look after Rin. Later, Rin deliberately moved into Kakashi's attack to prevent a disaster in the Hidden Leaf. Kakashi carried immense guilt, but he did not intentionally murder her.[1][2]
Not every late arrival is explicitly caused by a memorial visit; the story also offers other excuses. Still, what initially sounds like a teacher's silly joke becomes painful once we understand where his thoughts keep returning.
The original late student was Obito
Young Kakashi was strict about rules and punctuality. Obito, who would stop to help people in need, was the one who kept arriving late and getting scolded. Obito's belief that protecting comrades matters more than rigid obedience eventually transformed Kakashi.[2]
The boy who demanded punctuality became the teacher everyone waits for. A funny reversal—until you discover why it happened.
And then Obito returns as an enemy
Obito survived, became entangled with Madara and a plan to remake the world, and operated behind a mask. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Kakashi discovers that the enemy in front of him is the friend he has mourned for years. They fight.[3][4][5]
Kakashi: “I've been visiting my friend's memorial.” The story: “Your friend is currently trying to reshape reality.”
Those are comedic paraphrases, not actual manga dialogue. Obito's despair gives the twist its tragedy.
One reunion, then another farewell
Obito ultimately helps protect others and dies. Kakashi and Obito part as friends rather than enemies.[3][6] The emotional sequence is outrageous: “He's alive!” becomes “He's the enemy!” and then “We're losing him again!”
Conclusion
What looked like a punctuality gag carries grief, friendship and an inherited moral code. Imagine mourning at your best friend's memorial for years, only to discover he's alive and wearing the villain's mask. Naruto made a late entrance bear the weight of an entire lifetime.
