Spoiler warning: This article discusses the first Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway film through its ending, with only minimal character information from the second film.
A first-time viewer of Hathaway is very likely to ask:
“Wait. Which side is this person on right now?”
That is not a failure of comprehension. The protagonist is the head of an anti-government organization while casually eating, talking and gaining trust beside the enemy commander—who is literally arresting members of the protagonist’s organization.
And Gigi, who wears neither side’s uniform, is standing nearby.
The movie has the face of a giant-robot film, but much of its first half is closer to a spy drama.
1. Fix only three categories first: Federation, Mafty, Gigi
Do not memorize every title on a first watch. Fix three categories.
Earth Federation: Kenneth, Lane and Federation forces.
Mafty: Hathaway, Gawman, Emeralda, Mihessia and the rest.
Gigi: formally outside both organizations, acting as an independent catalyst in their relationships.
The official story identifies Mafty as an anti-Earth Federation government movement that assassinates ministers, and Hathaway as its true leader.
So Hathaway is not best understood as “a Federation spy.” He is the head of an anti-government movement hiding his identity while standing beside the enemy commander.
Confusion is built into the premise.
2. “We captured a Mafty member” — while Mafty himself is standing there
Gawman’s capture explains Hathaway’s double life in a single scene.
Gawman is a veteran Mafty mobile-suit pilot. Hathaway is Mafty’s leader.
Yet the screen effectively says:
Federation: “We caught a Mafty operative.”
Hathaway: “I see.”
Gawman: “…my boss is right there.”
Gawman gives Hathaway a brief look but says nothing. That glance communicates both familiarity and the fact that any visible reaction could destroy everyone.
In office-comedy terms, it is like an arrested employee being marched through a police station and discovering the criminal organization’s CEO chatting with the police chief.
The loyalty is impressive. The awkwardness is worse.
3. Bright and Amuro are Federation-side figures — yet Bright’s son leads an anti-Federation movement
The family tree makes things stranger.
Hathaway’s father Bright Noa is a Federation officer who fought the One Year War alongside Amuro Ray. Official material deliberately emphasizes that lineage.
Simplified:
Amuro: Federation side
Bright: Federation side
Bright’s son Hathaway: leader of an anti-Federation government movement
His followers therefore have to trust the son of a famous Federation officer. They do because Hathaway is not merely complaining about the government: he leads Mafty operations and personally pilots Xi Gundam.
If one jokingly imports the memory of Ohgi from Code Geass, it is tempting to ask when the organization will turn on its leader. But the Mafty shown in the first film is, at minimum, an organization whose captured veteran sees the boss and does not sell him out.
4. Why Gigi has such overwhelming “main heroine” visual presence
Gigi is young, blonde, dressed unlike the soldiers, and not embedded in either military hierarchy. Visually, she reads as “the heroine” far more strongly than the other women around her.
Her official profile describes her as a beautiful young woman who fascinates the men around her, shows insight bordering on precognition, and attracts the interest of both Hathaway and Kenneth.
Emeralda, by contrast, is a Mafty member attached to the mobile-suit force.
So their roles are fundamentally different:
Emeralda: a person doing the organization’s work.
Gigi: a person outside the organization chart who bends two men’s trajectories.
Of course Gigi stands out.
5. It looks like the movie contains nothing but composed men — but Hathaway is different inside
Kenneth is a Federation colonel, a former mobile-suit pilot, and a veteran of Char’s Rebellion who now commands the force hunting Mafty.
Gawman is also a seasoned veteran.
Their calmness under pressure makes sense.
Hathaway is the odd case. From the outside he can appear almost as composed as Kenneth. Yet actor Kensho Ono has described the difficulty of playing the gap between Hathaway’s “pleasant young man” face and his Mafty face in the first film.
So Hathaway is less:
a man with enormous inner calm
and more:
a man whose skill at displaying calm has become disturbingly good.
Lane, the young Federation pilot, provides contrast because his pride and frustration are much easier to see.
6. Did Gigi and Kenneth sleep together? The first film does not establish that as fact
Their distance is close and Kenneth’s dialogue is very adult, so the question is understandable.
But the first film and official character profiles do not establish a sexual relationship as confirmed fact. What the official material states is that Gigi briefly stays with Kenneth after the Davao attack and that the two have a powerful mutual awareness.
The second film also includes another woman, Mace Flower. Mace is a Haunzen flight attendant who moves from Hong Kong to the Davao base at Kenneth’s request.
So when remembering later scenes, it is important not to merge Gigi and Mace into one character.
Kenneth’s early talk about no longer getting excited around beautiful women should not be read as a retirement announcement. It is better understood as an older man presenting himself as someone who no longer becomes visibly flustered.
7. What is the difference between a mobile suit and a Gundam? Think “car” versus “specific model or lineage”
For a beginner, the rough rule is enough.
Mobile suit = the broad category of humanoid mobile weapons.
Gundam = a specific machine, lineage or naming category within it.
Xi Gundam is both a Gundam and a mobile suit. Messer is a mobile suit but not a Gundam.
Penelope is the tricky one. Officially, the form created by equipping Odysseus Gundam with the FF unit is called Penelope.
So the white monster opposite Xi does not have “Gundam” in its visible name, but its core very much does.
Xi is also not an ancient legendary Gundam being unsealed. It is a new fifth-generation mobile suit made by Anaheim and prepared by Mafty for its operation.
Not a legendary seal being broken. A classified new-car delivery.
8. What is the red-haired woman receiving in space? A 26-meter Gundam delivery
Emeralda is handling cargo that contains Xi Gundam.
Xi stands over 26 meters tall and even has arms larger than those of a standard mobile suit.
Space gives the eye almost no familiar scale references, so the cargo can look suspiciously small. The cargo itself is, of course, enormous.
In simple terms:
Package: latest Gundam
Size: roughly an eight-story-building class object
Delivery point: while descending from space
Later, Gawman transfers toward Xi in midair with such visual smoothness that it can feel like the scene is still in zero gravity.
It is not. They are inside the atmosphere and gravity exists.
In real physics, the important quantity is relative velocity, not simply height. To make the recovery plausible, Xi must closely match Gawman’s falling velocity so their speed difference is small.
Being a veteran pilot does not unlock a separate fall-damage-resistance skill tree.
9. The young opponent is Lane — and “a Gundam movie with hardly any Gundam” is intentional
Lane Aim is a young Earth Federation lieutenant and the development pilot of Penelope.
The late-film conflict can therefore be reduced to:
Hathaway + Xi Gundam = Mafty
versus
Lane + Penelope = Earth Federation
Only now does the movie become the easy-to-read “Gundam versus Gundam-family machine” spectacle many viewers expected.
It takes a while.
The first film saves Xi’s full entrance for late in the story. Before that: hijacking, hotels, Gigi, Kenneth, terrorism, urban combat and double identities.
Anyone who first knew Xi from a model kit is especially vulnerable to the trap.

10. This is a theatrical anime trilogy — and the internet’s “Senkou” is partly a different work
Hathaway is a three-film theatrical anime project. The first film opened in 2021; the second, The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, opened on January 30, 2026. As of September 2, 2026, the third film has no announced release date.
The first film’s theme song is [Alexandros]’s “Senkou.”
But the famous internet imagery of a pumpkin-headed dancer and chaotic edits is not the film’s actual end-credit sequence.
If the meme came first, the theme song begins and the brain says:
“Here it comes. The famous chaos.”
Normal credits roll.
It never comes.
That is the moment one discovers that the internet has been screening its own version of Hathaway for years.
11. Conclusion: it becomes easier when treated as a human drama where exposure means game over
The fastest way to understand the first film is not to memorize every machine name.
Fix only:
Federation = Kenneth and Lane
Mafty = Hathaway, Gawman and their people
Gigi = outside the organization chart
Then Gawman’s glance, Kenneth and Hathaway’s strange friendliness, and Gigi’s different visual temperature all connect.
It also becomes clear why the Gundam itself can wait until late.
In the first film, before any beam rifle, the most dangerous possible sentence is Kenneth saying:
“You’re Mafty, aren’t you?”
The giant robot is over 26 meters tall.
The biggest bomb in the room is still Hathaway’s identity card.
